Karan Johar, forget about a comeback because you can’t

Karan Johar bollywood

South Indian films have carved out a loyal fan base for them in Bollywood’s den. The success of movies like Baahubali, KGF, Pushpa, and now RRR are concrete evidence of that. Estimates by the mint newspaper had earlier suggested that they will be taking up more than 50 per cent of total box-office collections. Basically, they will be overtaking Bollywood in 2022.

One must agree that Tollywood has taken the Bollywood hegemony to the ground, proving that the immense success of a particular movie at the box office requires only one thing – entertaining content. Breaking the shackles of entertainment, these movies entertained the audience throughout the country.

However, Filmmaker Karan Johar is seemingly unhappy with the success of these Bollywood movies and thus, has vent out his anger during his interview with Film Companion.

Karan Johar’s delicious meltdown

A bad workman blames his tools and Karan Johar definitely is one such workman. Johar recently spoke about the tough phase being witnessed by the Hindi film industry. While only three Bollywood movies have succeeded at the box office till now in 2022, south Indian films dubbed in Hindi took the entertainment world by storm. As far as Karan Johar is to be believed, this is because “Hindi filmmakers lack the ‘conviction’ that south Indian directors have.”

While interacting with Film Companion, Karan said that “films like KGF: Chapter 2 and RRR, which have earned over Rs 1,100 crore worldwide, have a clarity of vision that isn’t there in Hindi films, which are trying to be too many things at once.”

Not only this, but he also claimed that if Bollywood had made KGF 2, the film would’ve been criticised.

Karan further said, “When I read the reviews of KGF, I’m like if we made this, we would be lynched. But here, everybody is like ‘Oh it was a celebration, a party’ and it was. I loved it. I loved it with all my heart. But I feel ‘hum yeh banaatetoh?’ (What if we had made this?)”

He added, “It’s working both ways. I feel we are also not given any kind of leeway and then we are trying to be somebody else. So, we are all over the place. We are living a dual existence and we have to stop.”

However, during the interview, he also said that “he now intends to direct more films in the next decade of his life, after having made just two features in the previous one.”

No comeback opportunity for Karan Johar

Well, have you watched a single sensible movie from Dharma productions in the last few years? Have you ever seen a movie from Dharma productions depicting the story of a nationalist? Well, no. Mind you, Shershaah and The Ghazi Attack were not Karan’s original idea but the result of someone else’s brainstorming. Let’s just be honest, KGF was no extraordinary film but it offered one thing that Bollywood always fails to offer and that is, entertainment. Leave alone ‘Major’, ‘RRR’, Vikram and Pushpa.

Karan Johar epitomises everything that is wrong with Bollywood. His idea of nepotism and unrealistic, imaginary content has caused the destruction of Bollywood. However, if he is still thinking of a comeback, he must give up the idea to do so as it is not possible.
