Japan creates a robot with a self-healing capacity

Humanoid robots

The frequent inventions are proving that the excellence of the human mind is unlimited. In every century, humans have surprised the world with unique and groundbreaking research and developments. From the mechanical invention of machines to the electrical development the same, these developments are frequently establishing the new height of human excellence. Similarly in the age of automation, robotics, the internet, and technology, researchers are now trying to create robots that can heal themselves like humans.

Self-healing robot

According to research published in the journal Matter, researchers from the University of Tokyo have created humanoid robots with self-healing characters like human beings. The research claims that through the ‘bio hybrid’ approach to generating robots covered with tissue-engineered skin, they have created skin coverage that not only results in a human-like appearance but also enables ‘self-healing’ functions.

The development is significant as the traditional robots work on the principles of command and act. The pre-placed programming functions control the actions of robots and do not have any human functioning or even appearances. But the Humanoid robots are created with human forms or characteristics and also have the capacity to interact with human beings.

In the development of humanoid robots, the effort of researchers has been to use a living skin model consisting of cells and extracellular matrix-like humans to make a self-healing coverage material for robots.

The research is inspired by the medical treatment of deeply burned skin using grafting hydrogels. Researchers demonstrated the same wound repairing system in robotic fingers by “culturing the wounded tissue grafted with a collagen sheet”.

Significance of this development

In the process of making humanoid-like robots, the invention will prove to be a game-changer in robotics technology. The self-healing technology development will not only benefit humanoid advancement but the common application of the technology is immense. For example, self-healing robotic prosthetics for physically impaired people will provide a more natural experience and will eliminate the need for maintenance and replacement in case of any damage.

It will further enhance the productivity of robots. Its adoption in common mechanical work will provide a more efficient and lower maintenance experience due to the self-healing character. In factories where there are high chances of not only damage to common labor but also the robot, the self-healing robots can autonomously fix themselves. Moreover, its adoption in large factories, agriculture, hospitality businesses, or any other purposes will reduce the cost immensely and will enlarge the horizon of uses.
