India forces Iran to take down arbitrary commentary on Nupur Sharma from their government website

India has risen on the world stage at a phenomenal level recently and the recent turn of events proves that as well. Events like Indian MEA thrashing USA and its allies left right and centre, or thrashing a reporter on ‘India sitting on the fence’ remark on Russia-Ukraine war are some of the primary examples of the rising Indian diplomacy. Similarly, Iran tried to play smart on the Prophet remark issue but India gave them a reverse UNO.

Iranian Foreign Minister’s visit to India

Recently, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian who assumed office last year visited India for the first time for the FIEO’s ‘Trade opportunity in Iran’ event in Mumbai. In this event, different aspects of trade with Iran were discussed. After this event Abdollahian met with different dignitaries of India such as PM Modi, MEA S Jaishankar, and NSA Ajit Doval among others.

After meeting PM Modi he tweeted, “Pleased to meet PM Modi, FM Jaishankar & other Indian officials to advance our bilateral strategic dialogue. Tehran & New Delhi agree on the need to respect divine religions & Islamic sanctities & to avoid divisive statements. Iran (flag) and India (flag) determined to bring relations to new heights.”

Abdollahian meets Muslim Clerics

Previously, Iran had joined the camp of Kuwait and Qatar, summoning the Indian ambassador over the Prophet remark. But after coming to India, he went on to meet Muslim clerics of India.

During a meeting with top Shia and Sunni Muslim clerics from India, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian said, “Scholars of Islam have played a historical role in India and the Islamic world and their glorification and efforts for promotion of the grand ideas of Imam Khomeini, including support for the subjugated and rejection of separation of religion and politics are worthy of praise and commendation,…”

Iran bows before Indian Diplomacy

It is a well-known fact that there is an ongoing contest between Iran and Saudi Arabia for the leadership of Islamic nations. To claim its leadership position, Iran posted a statement on its government website which read, “Referring to the negative atmosphere created by some people in disrespecting the holy site of the Prophet of Islam, the Indian official reiterated the respect of the Indian government and officials for the Holy Prophet. Wrongdoers will be dealt with at the level of the government and related bodies in a way that is a lesson to others,…”

The statement which was only in Persian language further emphasized on the areas of “need for comprehensive expansion of relations”, and “need for a strategic committee to expand relations in all fields” among others.

Hours after the statement was made public, Indian diplomacy came into action and the statement was taken down by Iran. Again, this is an example of the aggressive foreign policy set by Dr S Jaishankar, which deals with the pressure with élan.

The MEA spokesperson Arindam Bagchi released a statement stating, “I usually don’t like to comment on (talks) between senior dignitaries, and certainly on the NSA and the Iranian foreign minister I would not like to comment on what their conversation was. My understanding is that the readout (by Iranian foreign ministry) has been pulled down,…”

Also, adding to the issue of a boycott of Indian products and problems faced by Indians in Islamic nations, Bagchi stated that India will, “continue to monitor the situation” so that the Indian community and Indian interests “remain protected”.

This is not the same India which once succumbed to the pressure of the West. Thanks to Modi’s diplomacy, this is the India of today that we live in, which stands its ground firmly and always takes a stand against the pressure tactics of its counterpart/s whether friendly or not.
