In a world full of self-centred and profit-oriented nations, India is living up to its ‘Civilisational’ values. It has a core belief that God resides in every single being, be it flora or fauna, human or livestock. The powerful nations are engaged in a cut-throat competition to fulfil their greed. But India is finding ways to benefit a larger section of living beings. After helping the world in inoculating humans, India has developed a way to do the same for the livestock and wildlife of the world.

Ancovax

The Union Minister of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, Narendra Singh Tomar launched a vaccine for animals. Ancovax is the country’s first home-grown vaccine for animals. It is developed by the ICAR-National Research Centre on Equines (NRC). It works effectively and develops immunity against both the prominent variants of SARS-CoV-2. So, it will protect the animals by neutralising both Delta and Omicron variants. According to the company, it is currently safe for dogs, lions, leopards, mice and rabbits. The Vaccine contains inactivated SARS-CoV-2 (Delta) antigen with Alhydrogel as an adjuvant.

The ICAR spokesman Anil Sharma said, “Ancovax is an inactivated SARS-CoV-2 Delta (COVID-19) vaccine for animals. The immunity induced by Ancovax neutralises both Delta and Omicron Variant of SARS-CoV-2. The Vaccine contains inactivated SARS-CoV-2 (Delta) antigen with Alhydrogel as an adjuvant. It is safe for dogs, lions, leopards, mice and rabbits”.

While launching the vaccine for animals, Minister Tomar appreciated the work of Indian scientists. He also lauded India’s self-reliance in vaccination. He said, “It is due to the untiring contributions of scientists that the country stands self-reliant in developing its own vaccines more rather than importing. This is really a big achievement”.

Holistic Health Care for Animals

Besides Ancovax, the Minister also launched the ‘CAN-CoV-2 ELISA kit’ — a sensitive and specific nucleocapsid protein-based indirect ELISA kit — for antibody detection against COVID in canines. The most amazing aspect of this is that it is a completely indigenous kit. The ICAR has filed a patent as well. The company also informed that no animals are required to prepare antigens. The ICAR said, ”There are no laboratory animals required for the preparation of the antigens. The kit is made in India and a patent has been filed for the same. No other comparable kits for detection of antibodies in canines are available in the market”.

Additionally, the minister also launched the Equine DNA parentage testing kit, which is a powerful genomic technology for parentage analysis among horses.

National Animal Disease Control Programme

Indians have always considered livestock as a part of their family household. But sadly, in many households, diseases in livestock went untraced and their health deteriorated. Foot and Mouth diseases have been found to be the most devastating among livestock. To eradicate this plague, the Modi government started a wide scale National Animal Disease Control Programme (NADCP). In late 2019, PM Modi launched this nationwide drive for improving the health care of livestock.

We had seen how the powerful nations of the world had amassed COVID vaccines. Some reports claimed that these nations had to dump it after expiry. But the developing and under-developing world failed to get adequate inoculation shots. In that too India showed its core belief that everyone is equal. India along with South Africa pushed for a TRIPS waiver for equitable distribution of COVID vaccines. These Ancovax vaccines and diagnostic kits are yet another gift of India to those who had no voice.
