IISc – In constant pursuit of excellence

IISc – the World’s top research university

According to the latest QS World University Rankings 2023, the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru with a rank of 155, has emerged as the highest-ranked Indian institute. Rising 31 rank from QS World University Rankings 2022, in one year IISc has shown immense progress in its overall development. The other institutes like IIT- Bombay at 172 and IIT – Delhi at 174 have shown in the top 200 world rankings.

The IISc has received 49.5 overall rankings. The ranking is decided on the 8 standards evaluating progress like Academic Reputation (37.6), Employer Reputation (22.9), Faculty Student Ratio (56.3), Citations per Faculty (100), International Faculty Ratio (11.7), International Students Ratio (1.9), International Research Network (46) and Employment Outcomes (14.8).

Although the institute has received a low ranking in international faculty and student collaboration, it has been ranked as the world’s top research university in terms of Citations per faculty in the QS World University Rankings 2023. It has received 100/100 points in terms of CPF (Citation per Faculty). CPF represents the total number of citations received by all papers produced by an institution across five years by the number of faculty members at that institution.

Research makes it great

When Swami Vivekananda and Jamsetji Tata had an accidental meeting on a ship in 1893, that conversation between the two culminated in the establishment of a premier research institute for India. The vision of the institute includes excellence in research and promotion of innovation by offering world-class education to train future leaders in science and technology. It aims to impart world-class higher education in an environment of fundamental and applied research in science and engineering.

The IISc has produced many notable scientists like CV Raman, CNR Rao, JC Ghosh, Prof Satish Dhawan, and K Sivan. Its involvement in the key research and development projects is phenomenal. It has trained hundreds of scientists from the Indian Space Research Organization, Defense Research Development Organization, and other critical science projects.
