Twitter has always been a sensation in India because of the so-called ‘intellectual’ people. The platform has often been used by a particular section of society to propagate their unnecessary hate intentions. The Indian authorities have time and again warned the platform functionaries about this but the company seems to be lagging in complying in accordance with the government’s directions. If still the company fails to comply with the rules, then Twitter might face some severe consequences.
India is getting stringent over Twitter
Recently, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has given a stern warning to Twitter India to comply with the country’s Information Technology Rules by July 4. If it fails to do so, the company might lose its operations in India. The Ministry’s notice given to the micro-blogging platform Twitter on 27 June claimed that the company had failed to comply with notices sent on June 6 and June 9.
Officials told that this warning was followed by the “repeated failures to act on the content take-down notices sent under Section 69 A of the IT Act” and the “non-compliance notices issued for not taking the content down.” Further, the notice to Chief Compliance Officer (CCO) of Twitter read, “If Twitter Inc. continues to be in violation of these Directions and therefore the IT Act, significant consequences under the IT Act shall prevail.” This comprises, “loss of immunity as available to an intermediary under subsection (1) of section 79 of the IT Act and will be liable to punishment to offences as prescribed in the IT Act 2000.”
While showing concern over the issue, a senior official said, “Despite repeated notices and chances being given to them to act, Twitter continues to remain in violation. Therefore, appropriate action is being taken against (it). All intermediaries that operate in India must follow the IT Rules in letter and spirit.”
Amidst all this buzzing, it is also significant to note that it’s not yet clear as to exactly which specific content takedown notices Twitter had not acted upon. On the other hand, Twitter has always been the company in the limelight of controversies for inappropriate content published on the platform.

This is the final warning
It’s not the first time that the Indian authorities have issued a notice against Twitter India. The contentious tweets had never left the platform clean and simple.
In May 2021, the Delhi High Court said that Twitter is required to abide by the new Information Technology (IT) rules for digital media if it wants to stay in India.
In June 2021, Twitter was served with a notice to comply with the then newly formed IT Rules which mandated the platform to appoint India-based compliance and grievance officer. The notice also said that failing to do so, might result in consequences.
All these instances clearly show that Twitter has often breached the set guidelines by the Indian Ministries. India can’t afford to list more such examples in its history as these instances eventually lead to chaos. It’s high time for Twitter to comply with immediate actions in order to maintain its existence in the Indian social media market.
