It is June, and June brings Pride Month along every year. From June 1 to 30, pride month is celebrated to express solidarity with the LGTBQ+ community. While it started in the United States in 1969, it is now celebrated all across the world including India. Over the years, the movement has gained worldwide recognition and thus, many celebrities and international brands also come out to extend their support to the community.
There is nothing wrong with expressing support to the community but ‘wokeism’ can make everything go haywire. Burger King, the fast-food giant too failed to fight the menace of ‘wokeism’ and ended up receiving criticism due to its ‘woke’ idea.
Burger King’s ‘Pride Whopper’
Burger King tried to ‘celebrate’ Pride Month but unfortunately, ended up causing a stir on social media. All thanks to its woke idea to introduce ‘Pride Whopper’.
The fast-food giant Burger King, at the beginning of the month, announced the launch of a “Pride Whopper” with “two equal buns” — either two top buns or two bottom buns to promote “equal love and equal rights.”
Burger King, in an Instagram post, wrote that “We set an example for the equality of all identities and sexual orientations. A little twist meant to put a smile on our faces and remind us to treat each other with respect and peace. No matter who you are and who you love.”
‘Wokeism’ cost heavily to Burger King
The food giant must have thought that the stunt will help them attract the food-lovers more than before, but it backfired gloriously. Soon after the post went viral, it grabbed the eyeballs of several sections on social media. While some found the concept funny, others were criticising it. Mind you, even the community which Burger King was trying to appease, too, didn’t like the idea.
“Burger King Austria made a Pride burger that’s either two tops or two bottoms… what in straight hell?” Jarett Wieselman, a manager at Netflix, tweeted.

A person belonging to the community also stated, “As a gay person, this is the funniest thing I have ever seen and I don’t think I’ll ever stop laughing.”

Ad-agency apologises for ‘Pride Whopper’
Witnessing the backlash, the ad agency behind the promotion, came out asking for an apology and penned a post on LinkedIn.
The post read, “Unfortunately, we still messed up and didn’t check well enough with community members on different interpretations of the Pride Whopper. Our strongest concern is if we offended members of the LGBTQ Community with this campaign. If this is the case, we truly apologize.”
But the apology doesn’t seem to be genuine as Burger King Austria continued with the promotion. The Pride Whopper is still available in Austria until June 20.
The whole controversy suggests that there’s a thin line between ‘wokeism’ and the idea to extend support to anything. Burger King needs to take a lesson from the controversy and avoid falling for the menace of ‘wokeism’.
