Anna Hazare – The Frankenstein of Indian politics who created Arvind Kejriwal

Anna Hazare

Kisan Baburao Hazare aka Anna Hazare turns a year older today. Most of us remember how he famously shook the foundations of the Congress regime when he went on a 13-day hunger strike against the corrupt UPA machinery. While Anna’s ‘anshans’ made a little difference on the ground, he did manage to spawn a ‘creature’ that will use his name to propel himself to power and later become the existential threat to an entire country.

Akin to the way Victor Frankenstein in Mary Shelley’s 1818 novel “Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus” created the frightening ‘creature’ that went on a rampage — killing and decimating everything and anything; Anna Hazare, the Frankenstein in this case, created the monster in ‘Arvind Kejriwal’ unknowingly.

Arvind Kejriwal- Anna’s first aide

Arvind Kejriwal was one of the key lieutenants when Anna launched his anti-corruption crusade in 2011. However, Kejriwal, an opportunist of the highest degree understood that merely sitting on pavements and refusing to eat anything was not going to yield any power to him.

The former IRS officer wanted more and thus in 2012, going against the will of Anna, Kejriwal launched his political party under the name ‘Aam Aadmi Party’. Promising clean politics and riding the popularity of Anna, Kejriwal managed to instant success in the 2013 Assembly elections as Delhi searched for alternatives.

More importantly, Kejriwal managed to usurp almost every single person to his side who once stood with Anna. The former Army Man quietly retired to his ancestral home of Ralegan Siddhi while power started corrupting Kejriwal. In the name of Anna, Kejriwal laundered his image and managed to fool the public that he was in any shape or form, different from the ordinary politicians.

Anna starts criticizing Kejriwal

When AAP resigned after 49 days and decided to fight the 2014 general elections, it was one of the earliest instances when Anna criticized Kejriwal, calling him power-hungry. Later, Anna would criticize AAP and Kejriwal for not fulfilling the promise of providing a clean and transparent government to the masses.

In a letter in 2016, Anna wrote to Kejriwal, “You had promised to me and the society that you would usher in a change. Today I feel saddened that you didn’t fulfill that promise. If your party continues to work this way then what is the difference between your party and other parties?”

After the Assembly elections in Punjab and Goa in 2017, where the AAP faced humiliating defeat, Kejriwal raked up the issue of imaginary “EVM tampering.” Anna Hazare again lashed out at Kejriwal. “EVMs should not be done away with. Those who are voicing doubt over the machines are trying to take us back in time,” said Hazare.

Anna played a pivotal part in creating Kejriwal

While Hazare may play the victim card that Kejriwal went over his head and kick-started his political career, the truth of the matter is that Hazare shaped Kejriwal from the beginning. Anna nurtured the AAP leader and fed into his ego, much like Viktor Frankenstein, when he agreed to build a female counterpart to the ‘creature’.

And since then, Kejriwal has come a long way. He has openly supported the anti-national elements, and Khalistan supporters and ridiculed the pain and sufferings of the Kashmiri Hindu community by dubbing ‘The Kashmir Files’ as ‘Fake’. Such has been the thirst of power that Kejriwal has put aside his nationalism and raised questions over the authority of Army. The aftermath of the Balakot air strikes being a case in point.

In the couple of months that AAP has been power in Punjab, it appears that the era of bloodshed has returned. The ordinary as well as big names are being gunned down on a routine basis while the Khalistanis continue to flourish. And all this transpired because a certain Anna Hazare decided to enrol a meek looking anti-corruption crusader by his side.
