Driven to the wall, Hemant Soren likens Centre-State relations to that of Russia and Ukraine

Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren has now resorted to playing the victim card

To save himself from the inevitable doom, the Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren has now resorted to playing the victim card. The Central agencies are exposing the long list of criminalities he has allegedly committed. Hence, to ditch all the responsibilities for his alleged corruption and other misdeeds, he is trying to portray himself as a martyr of the larger conspiracy, stitched by the Centre.

Outlandish analogy

The JMM leader and Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren has been caught in a whirlpool of cases which have the potential of not only ending his political career but may very well put him behind bars. So, he gave a bizarre analogy and compared the relationship between state and central government to that of Russia and Ukraine.

He said, “The way the Centre had been spreading propaganda, using agencies to destabilise a democratically elected state government in Jharkhand, it can be compared to Russia’s military action to demilitarize and wipeout Ukraine. Russia had thought it could knock down Ukraine in a day or two, but look how Ukraine is staging a counter-offensive, with the war going on for three months now”.

Veiled threat, reason behind it

Through the bizarre analogy, Soren issued a veiled threat to the central government. He has raked the issue of non-payment of dues by the PSUs for the minerals extracted from the state and warned the centre that he may stop the coal supply to the PSUs. In this way, he is playing the ugliest form of Politics and linking charges levelled against him to the state he runs. He is painting the allegations against him as a step-motherly treatment to the state.

The Jharkhand CM has resorted to these dirty tricks because recently the Enforcement Directorate (ED) had arrested State Mining Secretary Pooja Singhal. Before this arrest, the ED had recovered 19.31 crores in cash from the residence of Suman Kumar who is the CA of now arrested mining secretary Pooja. Soren’s panic and anxiety can be understood from the fact that the repercussions of this arrest may engulf him, as he is an accused in the case.

It is alleged that the Jharkhand CM misused his power as the Mining Minister and allocated a quarry mine lease to himself. This according to many experts is a fit case of ‘office of profit’ and is currently being pursued by the Election Commission at the request of the Governor. This may result in his disqualification as an elected representative and force him to vacate the CM post.

Degraded Politics

There was a time when leaders practised clean politics. Leaders accused of corruption at least had the decency to resign from their posts. This strengthened the people’s faith in the process, and politics at large, and avoided speculation of any undue advantage in the cases. But sadly, this trend of politics is rare to see in contemporary times. On the contrary, the absolute opposite is taking place nowadays. The Jharkhand CM is the prime example of this changed and degraded political landscape.

Reverse countdown begins for Jharkhand CM

The fate of the Jharkhand CM seems to be in the hands of the Election Commission and the Jharkhand High Court. There are high chances that Soren’s alleged corruption will result in his ouster from the CM’s office and put him behind bars.

Cases involving the incumbent CM are being heard in the Jharkhand High Court, one pertaining to his disproportionate assets and money laundering in which the honourable court had directed the ED and Registrar of Company (ROC) to submit a detailed report on the wealth accumulated by CM, his family and his associates. In the mining lease allotment case, the Advocate General of the state representing Hemant Soren stated that the allotment of the mining lease by the CM to himself was a ‘mistake.’

This trick of portraying himself as a martyr to the centre’s conspiracy may work among the devoted voter base but it will not free him from his guilt in the eyes of law. He is reaping what he sowed. It seems his karma is fast catching up with him. The upcoming tumultuous time in Jharkhand may see light at the end of the tunnel as the JMM leader’s days as CM are numbered now.
