At the age of 21, she was elected as the mayor of the corporation from Mudavanmukal ward in the Nemom Assembly Constituency of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), making her the country’s youngest mayor.

Arya was born on 12 January 1999, in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, India.

Rajendran, an electrician, and Sreelatha, a LIC agent, have a daughter named Arya Rajendran.

She attended Carmel Girls Higher Secondary School in Trivandrum for her education. She is a second-year B.Sc Mathematics student at Thiruvananthapuram’s All Saints College.

Arya got engaged to K. M. Sachin Dev in March 2022. K.M Sachin Dev has been a member of the Kerala Legislative Assembly since May 2021, representing the Balussery constituency. In the 15th Kerala Legislative Assembly, he is the youngest MLA. He is the State Secretary of the Kerala State Committee of the Students’ Federation of India.

How did she become mayor at such a young age?

After the CPI’s and state committees approved her candidacy, the party’s district and state committees chose 21-year-old Arya Rajendran as its mayoral candidate. She is a first-time councilor from Thiruvananthapuram Corporation’s Mudavanmugal division.

She was selected as the candidate as a step toward the party’s goal of appointing educated women to top positions. In the recently ended local body elections, the party secured 51 seats in the 100-member council. The largest opposition party is the BJP, which has 35 seats. With ten councilors, the Congress-led UDF was reduced to third place. In the corporation, there are four independent councilors.

The CPi(M) have proposed Pushpalatha, the former head of the Health Standing Committee, A.G. Olena, and Jameela Sreedharan as mayoral candidates. Pushplatha and Olena were defeated in the polls, and the party preferred Arya Rajendran, a 21-year-old student, against Jameela Sreedharan, a retired government employee.

Political journey of Arya Rajendran

Arya Rajendran is the state president of Kerala’s largest children’s organisation, Bala Sangham. She is a member of the Students’ Federation of India’s state committee. and is a member of the CPI(MChala )’s area committee.

She was the youngest candidate in the district’s 2020 local body elections, running for the Communist Party of India (Marxist) from Mudavanmugal ward in Thiruvananthapuram Corporation.

By 2872 votes, she defeated UDF candidate Sreekala.

Previously Sabitha Beegum, the youngest mayor in India, was elected at the age of 23, while Devendra Fadnavis, the opposition leader in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly, was elected at the age of 23.

At the age of 27, Fadnavis was elected mayor of Nagpur Municipal Corporation.
