Saranya Ponvannan Biography and Career
Saranya Ponvannan is an Indian actress who works primarily in Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam films. Saranya made her acting debut in Mani Ratnam’s Nayakan (1987) and went on to portray lead roles in a number of films between 1987 and 1996. She returned to films in 2003, after an eight-year hiatus, as a character performer. Saranya Ponvannan was born in 1970 in Alappuzha, Kerala, India. She was raised in a Christian family in Alappuzha, Kerala, and is the daughter of Malayalam cinema director A. B. Raj, who has directed over 75 films. Saranya married actor and director Ponvannan in 1995, and they have two daughters together.
Debut and the first phase of career
In 1987, Saranya Ponvannan made her Tamil debut as the female lead opposite Kamal Haasan in Mani Ratnam’s film Nayakan. Her Telugu debut was in the 1988 film Neerajanam, and her Malayalam debut came a year later in the 1989 film Artham, in which she starred opposite Mamooty. In 1996, nearly at the conclusion of her acting career as a lead actress, she made her Kannada film debut in Appaji.
Break from films
She stopped acting after her marriage in 1995. She did, however, debut as the lead in the comedic television series Veettukku Veedu Lootty in 2000, and went on to accept other supporting roles in other projects after that. In 2006, she starred in the Sun TV family drama Mugangal.
Comeback and later career
She made a comeback in the Tamil film Alai in 2003, playing Silambarasan’s mother opposite Raghuvaran. In the mid-2000s, she became known for her “mother” parts in films such as Raam, Thavamai Thavamirundhu, and Em Magan.
Her performance as Veerayi, a bereaved mother trapped between love and possessiveness, garnered her the National Film Award for Best Actress in the 2010 film Thenmerku Paruvakaatru, her 100th release.
Thavamai Thavamirundhu, a Tamil film released in 2005, was her big break, and she went on to become a popular and leading actor in South India. She was one of the highest-paid character actresses in South Indian cinema as of 2017.

Short biography of Saranya Ponvannan
Saranya Ponvannan only had three releases in 2017. She had a cameo appearance in the sequel to the 2014 Tamil film Velaiyilla Pattathari, reprising her role as Bhuvana. The character died in the first film, but the directors wanted her to return in the sequel because she was instrumental in the success of the first. Her second collaboration was with Vishnu Vishal in the film Katha Nayagan, in which she played Vishnu Vishal’s mother. Later, she acted alongside Jyothika, Oorvasi, and Bhanupriya in the women-centric film Magalir Mattum.
In 2018, she made her acting debut as Vemal’s mother in the comedy-family drama Mannar Vagaiyara; her comedic timing was warmly applauded, but Itly was released to mixed reviews. She later appeared in Vijay Sethupathi’s Junga and Nayanthara’s Kolamavu Kokila as Kokila’s mother, who, although having lung cancer, helps her daughter smuggle cocaine.
In the Kannada film The Villain, directed by Prem, she played Vishalavva, the mother of Shiva Rajkumar’s character. Later, she played Chembammal in Madhupal’s Malayalam thriller drama Oru Kuprasidha Payyan.

Other activities
She founded DSOFT (Design & School of Fashion Technology), a fashion institute in Virugamakkam, Chennai, in 2014.
