America is considered a leader of the free world. A world that is supposed to be free of biases against immutable characteristics like race and ethnicity. Ironically, the big and influential heads in the country are turning out to be some of the biggest race-baiters. A veteran professor Amy Wax is also one of them.
Professor insults India
Recently, Amy Wax, who is an American academic and Professor of Law at the University of Pennsylvania Law School tried to demean Indian Americans. She was talking to Tucker Carlson, a famous Fox News host, whose show is the most-watched TV show in America. She especially targeted high achiever Brahmin women for her hateful remark.
Carlson and Amy Wax talked in great depth about the equations which various ethnic groups have formed with the American system. Amy seems to believe that just because Brahmin women have come from different countries, they should not be criticising the American way of doing things. For her, it doesn’t matter how much they have contributed to the American Economy in their lifetimes.

During the interview, she said, “Here’s the problem. They (Brahmin women from India) are taught that they are better than everybody else because they are Brahmin elites and yet, on some level, their country is a shit hole.” She was talking about Indian origin female Doctors frustrated with the system in which they serve patients. Carlson was seen laughing at her comments.
Hey Amy Wax @pennlaw, some of us Indian American docs @PennMedicine do our part to make America the great healthcare system you describe. So, yeah, we have the right to criticize it too.
“Caste” “Brahmins” “3rd world” “shithole counties”…yup, in 2022!pic.twitter.com/I0rtMNf2l2

Amy’s comments drew sharp criticism from the Internet. Indians, as well as Indian Americans, openly took to Social media platforms to criticise her. Few expressed surprise over this kind of comment made in the 21st century, while others revealed that it is just the tip of the iceberg of Amy’s thoughts and she has far worse views.
Wax then attacks Indian immigrants for criticizing things in the US when "their country is a shithole" and goes on to say that "the role of envy and shame in the way that the third world regards the first world […] creates ingratitude of the most monstrous kind." pic.twitter.com/dUL9coinS9

Amy Wax is not aware of the on-ground reality
Apparently, Amy Wax does not look in touch with reality. First of all, immigrants are the backbone of the American Economy. In fact, preaching peace and harmony among different ethnicities is not a moral lesson. It is America’s economic and social requirement. It’s only when they will bring in immigrants and ask them to live peacefully with each other, that they will get low wage labourers for their industries.
Secondly, the Ethnoic group which Amy Wax targeted is the most successful immigrant ethnic group in the USA. According to a report in 2021, Indian Americans are the largest group of South Asian immigrants in the US. With more than 45 lakh in numbers, Indian Americans comprise 1.4 percent of the American population.
Indian American CEOs
Indians have left no stone unturned in making America a better place. In fact, the Silicon Valley of India owes its success to Indians. During the Dotcom bubble in the late nineties and early 2000s, Indian immigrants found more STEM companies than immigrants from the UK, China, Taiwan and Japan combined. In 2006, more than 15.5 per cent of the average American startup companies were founded by an Indian immigrant. A 2014 study found that more than 25 per cent of Indian Business school graduates could choose to work in America.
A 2018 study found that 30 percent of American companies listed in Fortune 500 and S&P were being led by Indian CEOs. Companies like Twitter, Microsoft and Google are being led by Parag Aggarwal, Satya Nadella and Sundar Pichai, all having Indian origins. In fact, the top contender for the next Apple CEO replacing Tim Cook is also an Indian American named Sahib Khan.
Indians are everywhere and it’s in USA’s interest to keep them happy
Not just CEOs, Indians are dominating in other fields as well. According to a 2015 study by Pew Research, Indian Americans are four times more likely to obtain a bachelor’s degree than the average American. Similarly, an Indian immigrant is nearly three times less likely to fall under the poverty line than immigrants of other ethnicities. According to a 2021 study, median-income households in Indian Americans are highest among any immigrant ethnic group except Whites, who have apparently, made America their home.
With so many laurels to their name, it is unfortunate that Indian Americans are facing this treatment in 2016. Carlson is the most famous TV personality in America. It means that her clips will reverberate in maximum American homes. This will ultimately harm the USA. Indians are entrepreneurial, they can survive anywhere. It’s the USA that is set to lose.
