Soundarya was educated at the Ashram Matriculation Higher Secondary School in Velachery, Chennai, where she was born as Shaku Bai Rao Gaikwad.

In 2007, Ocher Studios and Warner Bros. Entertainment agreed to collaborate on producing and distributing Tamil films. Sultan: The Warrior, a 3D animated feature starring her father, was scheduled to be her directorial debut. The film was canceled despite extensive pre-production promotion, which included a trailer and an interactive website. Instead, she directed Kochadaiiyaan, India’s first motion capture film, starring Rajinikanth. Soundarya made history by becoming the first woman to direct her father in a feature film with Kochadaiiyaan.
