Plastic ban controversy
The family of one of the state’s ministers has benefited directly from the state government’s decision to soften its recently announced plastic ban.
The Shiv Sena leader and Industries Minister Subhash Desai, whose sons own Raigad Foods Pvt Ltd, which manufactures and promotes packaged drinking water, benefited from the government’s decision to exempt plastic bottles from the ban announced on March 23.
The company, which is based in Goregaon (west), would have gone out of business as a result of the ban. However, Raigad Foods was given a fresh lease on life when the Environment Ministry decided to exempt polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and polyethylene terephthalate esters (PETE) bottles with a liquid holding capacity of less than 0.5 litres from the ban.
Larger-capacity bottles were never included in the ban to begin with. Another Shiv Sena minister, Ramdas Kadam, is in charge of the Environment Ministry.
