She is a member of the Social Democratic Party (SDP). Marin was appointed Prime Minister on December 8, 2019, following Antti Rinne’s resignation in the wake of the 2019 postal strike.
Marin and her fiancé Markus Räikkönen welcomed their first child, Emma, in January 2018. Marin and Räikkönen, who works in communications, married in August 2020 at Kesäranta, the prime minister’s official house. Their regular residence is in Tampere’s Kaleva neighbourhood, but they lived in Kesäranta during the COVID-19 pandemic. She has stated that if she had her way, she would relocate to the countryside.
