Kanhaiya Kumar Controversies
Kanhaiya Kumar was arrested by the Delhi Police in February 2016 during an event on the JNU campus on charges of sedition. JNU students organized the event to celebrate the second anniversary of Parliament attack convict and terrorist Afzal Guru’s hanging. Kumar denied yelling slogans that threatened the country’s integrity. Opposition parties, teachers, students, and intellectuals all reacted angrily to Kumar’s detention. To protest his arrest, JNU students went on strike.
When Kumar was brought to the Patiala House court for hearings on the case, he was attacked on several occasions. A Supreme Court-appointed body later confirmed that the security failings were caused by the police officers present at the Court.
Kanhaiya Kumar gave a speech to a crowded auditorium on the JNU campus on March 3, 2016, in which he stated that he was seeking freedom inside India rather than freedom from India. He asked his supporters to continue shouting Azadi slogans (freedom).
Leaders of non-BJP political parties as well as independent analysts praised the address. Kumar has now become a “national political celebrity,”. But after this ruckus and political stunt he finally found Azadi in India’s most corrupt political party- Congress.
