Grasse in France is currently the perfume capital of the world, a tag that Kannauj can easily win

Kannauj Perfume Market Uttar Pradesh

Uttar Pradesh-based companies are achieving new feats in the last few years with active support and encouragement from the government. A Kannauj based company launched its line of perfume in New York. Now the perfumes produced in Uttar Pradesh will be sold in the richest city in the world, competing with French brands.

“It is a fusion of spices & flowers dedicated to Indian culinary. We’ll also launch a perfume dedicated to our hometown, perfume capital of India, Kannauj. We’ve named it ‘Kannauj’,” said Zighrana CEO Swapnil Pathak Sharma, reports news agency ANI.

Grass, a subprefecture in France, is considered the perfume capital of the world. But given the quality, class, and price of Kannauj, it can emerge as a rival of French dominance. Kannauj has many big industrialists dealing in the perfume and have sales worth thousands of crore rupees, but they never got a chance to formalise their business and place products in the global market. Now, with the government’s support, the companies are expected to launch a line of products targeting global consumers.

Swapnil Pathak Sharma says Indian perfume being launched in New York is a thing of pride. “It is an honour to launch the product here in New York. Coming from a small town, it is a dream come true. Presenting my city on such a global platform is a pleasure,” he said.

India’s export in goods is soaring in the last few months and perfume from Kannauj can add another success story. The export of mobile phones from India grew by a massive 250 per cent year-on-year in the April-June quarter of FY22, thanks to the PLI scheme. There was also a sharp decline in the import of mobile phones at Rs 600 crore during the first quarter. The main aim of helping the mobile phone segment was to boost exports and, in some cases, for national security.

Similarly, despite a sluggish market environment for the automotive sector in the financial year 2020-21, overall automobile exports grew 56.55 per cent in March 2021, owing to the PLI scheme.

The PLI scheme in the sector is interlinked with the plan for Advance Chemistry Cell (ACC) battery storage. With the cabinet approving the scheme for ACC battery storage production in May 2021, the government has set its sight on making India more environment-friendly and slowly phasing out petrol and diesel-based vehicles. The government is playing the long game by betting on the upcoming booming Electronic Vehicle (EV) market.

India in the last fortnight or so has inoculated over 1 crore vaccines in a single day on three separate occasions. The total number of jabs administered has breached the 70-crore mark, despite the doomsayers expecting otherwise through their carefully crafted yet dumb models. The rise and the success of the Indian vaccine story can be attributed to the Pharma sector and in turn the PLI scheme. After China and the US refused to provide the raw materials required for the production of vaccines, India turned inward and ushered a revolution within the industry.

PLI scheme was kickstarted with Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs)/ Key Starting Materials (KSM) as the focus products. A second PLI scheme for the pharmaceutical sector was launched earlier this year in March with an outlay of an additional USD 2 billion.

The government is actively supporting all the businesses with export potential and the perfume industry will also get support from the state as well as the Union government. This will help the perfume makers to produce and market world-class products to the global market, earning billions of dollars in foreign exchange and employment generation for many people in Uttar Pradesh.
