Dr Ramesh Pokhriyal popularly known as the former Education Minister of India. In the 17th Lok Sabha, he represents the Uttarakhand Parliamentary seat of Haridwar.

Dr Ramesh Pokhriyal is an Indian politician who was named Minister of Human Resource Development on May 31, 2019, and his title was changed to Minister of Education in July 2020 with the ministry’s name change. In July 2021, he was asked to retire from his job, just before a cabinet upheaval that saw several high-ranking ministers fired due to poor performance.

From 2009 until 2011, Dr Ramesh Pokhriyal served as Uttarakhand’s 5th Chief Minister. He served as the chairperson of the Committee on Government Assurances in the 16th Lok Sabha.

Family and Education of Dr Ramesh Pokhriyal

Pokhriyal was born to Paramanand Pokhriyal and Vishambhari Devi in Pinani village, Pauri Garhwal, Uttarakhand. He graduated from Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University with a master’s degree.

On May 7, 1985, Pokhriyal married Kusum Kanta Pokhriyal, with whom he had three daughters. Arushi Nishank Pant, one of their daughters, is a classical dancer. His wife, who was 50 years old at the time, died in Dehradun on November 11, 2012.

His net worth according to his declaration affidavit to the Election Commission of India is more than 2 crores. Dr Ramesh Pokhriyal began his teaching career at Saraswati Shishu Mandir, which is linked with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. In 1991, he was elected to the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly from the Karnaprayag constituency, defeating a five-term Congress MLA. He was re-elected from the same constituency in 1993 and 1996.

In 1997, he was appointed as the development minister of Uttaranchal. He was also the chief minister of Uttarakhand from 2009 to 2011, as well as a member of the 17th Lok Sabha and the chairman of the Assurance Committee. In the Lok Sabha, he represents the Haridwar constituency.

From 1991 until 2012, he served in the Legislative Assembly of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand for five consecutive terms.

He was elected to the Karnaprayag ward for the first time in 1991 and served three terms. In 2014, he resigned from the Doiwala and ran for the Lok Sabha seat of Haridwar.

Dr Ramesh Pokhriyal was sworn in as the 2nd Modi Government’s Minister of Human Resource Development on May 30, 2019. He served as Minister of Education when the ministry’s name was changed to Ministry of Education (India) in July 2020, until resigning in July 2021, apparently due to health issues. However, there reports that he had been forced to retire because of poor performances.

Career in Literature

Dr Ramesh Pokhriyal is a writer of novels, short tales, and poetry. In Hindi, he has written 44 books, some of which have been translated into English and other Indian languages. Many of his works were released between 2009 and 2011, when he was Chief Minister of Uttarakhand, by two private publishers: Vani Prakashan and Diamond Books.

Major Nirala, a Garhwali film produced by his daughter Arushi Nishank Pant and premiered in 2018, was based on one of his works.

In 2021, the Hindi Writers Guild of Canada honored him by awarding him the “Sahitya Gaurav Samman.”
