TMC wants Tesla to set base in West Bengal, people laugh in “TATA”

Elon Musk, TMC, Tesla, Tata, Banerjee, Mamata

Mamata Banerjee is losing her foothold in Bengal. This is the reason why the lady once known for sending off capitalists like Ratan Tata is now begging them to return. The latest company to get this proposal from TMC is Tesla.

Musk desperately wants to establish his business in India

Elon Musk, the unorthodox billionaire is looking to set up his base in India. However, in a competitive market like India, it’s not easy for him to do that. This is the reason why he has asked for some concessions from the Modi government. One of these concessions is a reduction in import duties.

When asked about the possible launch of Tesla’s products in India, Musk tweeted, “Still working through a lot of challenges with the government.” He was referring to the Indian government’s insistence on starting a manufacturing unit before any chances of concessions.

Mamata Banerjee administration invites Tesla

The tweet became an opportunity for the opposition to promote their political virtue-signalling. One of those parties is Trinamool Congress (TMC). Md Ghulam Rabbani, the minister for minority development and Madrasa education in the West Bengal government, was quick to reply.

Rabbani, who is not even in charge of business and investment portfolios in West Bengal, replied to Elon Musk through a tweet, which read, “Drop here, we in West Bengal have best infra & our leader @MamataOfficial has got the vision. Bengal means Business.”

Invitation mocked by BJP

Rabbani’s invitation came as a surprise for everyone. West Bengal is infamous for Gundaraaj. Political violence is rampant in the state. In fact, various bodies like National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and Calcutta High Court have criticised Mamata Banerjee’s administration on rapid violence.

Stating obvious facts, Amit Malviya, BJP’s IT-cell in charge tweeted, “You might think it is a joke. But it isn’t! West Bengal’s minister in charge for Minority Affairs and Madrasa Education has made an offer to Elon Musk to come invest in WB. His pitch will start with Mamata Banerjee‘s record on post poll violence and end with Singur agitation?”

Mamata’s recent capitalist tilt

Elon Musk is not the only businessman, which the TMC administration is trying to hobnob with. On 3rd December (2021), Mamata Banerjee held a meeting with businessman Gautam Adani. The meeting was held in Nabanna, the temporary State Secretariat of West Bengal.

Mamata and Mr Adani discussed various subjects, including investment opportunities in West Bengal. Mamata’s recent capitalism tilt is in stark contrast to her methods of vote-grab from the Communist regime in West Bengal.

In 2007, Mamata Banerjee had led a rhetorical revolt against the establishment of Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Nandigram. Similarly, in 2008, Ratan Tata had to remove his TATA Nano production line outside Singur. TATA had explicitly expressed frustration for the TMC Supremo’s anti-TATA stand.

TMC’s proposal to Tesla is both laughable as well as antithetical to established norms. Any industrialist wants a peaceful environment to further his business. They do a thorough background check on the state’s record vis-à-vis investment. In those scenarios, TMC roping in Elon Musk is barely a possibility.
