Suvendu Adhikari, the former TMC leader who joined BJP and defeated Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in his home turf Nandigram, is back in the limelight. Given his political heft and rise in the BJP as a strong opposition leader in West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee has been chasing after him to have him the firebrand leader arrested and out of the political playground by any means possible. However, her attempts to silence Suvendu Adhikari keep failing and most recently, the Supreme Court has shut down her attempts to have Adhikari arrested.
Supreme Court to lift Suvendu’s protection from arrest
In a major jolt to the Mamata-led West Bengal Government, the Supreme Court, on Monday, dismissed its plea against the order of Calcutta High Court for protection of West Bengal’s opposition leader Suvendu Adhikari from arrest.
The division bench of the Calcutta High Court, on September 6 last year, had granted an interim stay on any coercive action against Adhikari in connection with the criminal cases lodged against him. It must be noted that these cases were registered after he left the ruling Trinamool Congress to join BJP.
In the aftermath of the orders to shield Suvendu Adhikari from arrest, a fuming West Bengal government challenged the decision before the division bench that denied staying the order. Against this denial, the Mamata-led Bengal Government had knocked on the door of the top court.
And guess what, the Supreme Court has also denied the plea.
During Monday’s hearing, the bench of justices DY Chandrachud and AS Bopanna observed, “On December 13, the court had dismissed appeals filed by the West Bengal government and a complainant in one of the cases on the ground that the HC order was passed as an interim direction, pending final consideration of Adhikari’s petition. The top court’s order had permitted the state to file an application before the high court to vacate the stay.”

Earlier as reported by TFI, after Chakraborty’s wife filed a complaint seeking a probe, the CID set up a team to investigate Subhabrata Chakraborty’s death. Last year, in June, a four-member team of CID visited Adhikari’s home in East Medinipur. In the investigation at least 15 people, including some police personnel, were questioned. Suvendu, along with his driver, Sambhu Maity and close aid Sanjeev Shukla were summoned by CID.

Interestingly, the summoning of Adhikari comes days after the Enforcement Directorate called Trinamool Congress general secretary and West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee’s nephew, Abhishek Banerjee, and his wife Rujira Banerjee, in a money laundering case.
