Vedic Maths will be taught in Gujarat’s schools and other states must follow

Vedic, Mathematics, Gujarat

The state of Gujarat is setting a new milestone in the Indian education system with a transformative move- the introduction of Vedic mathematics in school education from the next academic year.

Introduction of Vedic mathematics in Gujarat schools:

Education Minister Jitu Vaghani made the big announcement on Wednesday on the birth anniversary of renowned Indian mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan.

Ramanujan was born on December 22, 1887. Vaghani said, “Great Indian mathematician Ramanujan’s birthday is celebrated in India as National Mathematics Day. On this occasion, the state government has decided to introduce Vedic math in schools in a phase-wise manner.”

The subject will be introduced in a phased manner from the academic year 2022-23 in standards 6th to 10th to “spread the Indian Knowledge System as envisioned in the National Education Policy.”

The Minister added, “Vedic math will improve the students’ command of the subject and also make the subject easier to understand. Vedic math will make students take interest in mathematics.”

Vedic mathematics makes problem-solving easier:

Vedic mathematics is an ancient Indian method that makes mathematics simpler by integrating arithmetic operations into 16 `sutras’ or formulae.

Former president of the Gujarat Secondary School Teachers Federation Pankaj Patel said, “I welcome this decision. Vedic math is a part of our ancient knowledge that will help students in improving their ability to solve math problems in less time.”

Patel added, “Even foreign countries have been teaching Vedic math to their students.”

Vedic mathematics is more of a magical knowledge concept that makes arithmetic problem-solving easier and faster. By reducing the steps involved, it cuts the time needed to solve complex mathematical problems. It also creates multiple approaches for solving problems and getting an answer.

Other states must follow Gujarat:

Just like Yoga, Vedic mathematics is a part of our ancient knowledge system. It is our cultural heritage and it is time that we embrace it.

In a competitive world where efficiency matters a lot, Vedic mathematics is tailor-made to help Indian students. At the end of the day, the students have to deal with complex mathematics problems from their early school years till their competitive examinations. So, better problem-solving methods inculcated by Vedic mathematics help.

Other states must take a cue from Gujarat and also introduce Vedic mathematics as a part of the curriculum, thereby acknowledging India’s ancient knowledge wealth.
