Sushil Kumar

Sushil Kumar is a former Indian wrestler who was born on May 26, 1983. At the 2012 London Olympics, he carried the Indian flag at the opening ceremony. His bronze medal at the 2008 Summer Olympics was India’s second in wrestling, and the first since Khashaba Dadasaheb Jadhav’s bronze at the 1952 Summer Olympics. In July 2009, he was awarded India’s highest sports honor, the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna. Kumar presented Prince Charles with the Queen’s Baton during the Queen’s Baton Relay during the 2010 Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony on 3 October 2010. At the 2014 Commonwealth Games, Sushil won gold in the 74 kg division.

Kumar was motivated to start wrestling by his father, who is also a wrestler, and his cousin Sandeep, who is also a wrestler. Sandeep eventually retired from wrestling since his family could only support one wrestler. Kumar began his pehlwani wrestling training at the Chhatrasal Stadium’s akhada (wrestling school) at the age of 14.

His family made sure he got the essential dietary supplements by sending him tinned milk, ghee, and fresh vegetables because he had limited cash and insufficient training facilities for wrestling in India, even for the 2008 Olympic team. He is a devout Hindu who follows a rigorous vegetarian diet.
