Khilji dynasty History

The Khalji or Khilji dynasty among one of the dynasty which comes in India from foreign country. It was a Turco-Afghan dynasty which ruled the Delhi sultanate for long period of time. This dynasty covered the large parts of the Indian subcontinent. Between 1290 and 1320 This dynasty ruled for nearly three decades. Founder of Khilji dynasty was Jalal ud din Firuz Khalji and this is the second dynasty who rule the Delhi Sultanate of India.

Rise and first sultan

Through a revolution it came up in power which transfer the power from the monopoly of Turkic nobles to Afghans.

The first Sultan of the Khilji dynasty was Jalaluddin Firuz Khilji and he ruled for almost six years from 1290 to 1296. After 6 years of his ruling, he was slain by his nephew Alauddin Khalji and then murdered by his nephew.

This dynasty is known for their faithlessness and ferocity which conquests into the south part of India, and for successfully fending off the repeated Mongol invasions of India.

Main goals Allaudin were to improve the management, improve the army, equip the land tax administration apparatus, and enhance the people’s agriculture and comfort. For all these he established the Zabita rule Biswa as a common measure of cultivable area. Alauddin Khalji also changed the tax policies and increase the amount of taxes from 20% to 50% to strengthen his treasury and to pay his growing army and to maintain expansion of was funds.

Alauddin was a supporter education to all and develop art and architecture during his ruling period. He had several prominent ministers in his ministry, including Amir Khusrau & Mir Hasan Dehlvi, even though he was himself uneducated. He regularly and actively supported architecture, constructing a whole city named Siri and expanding the Qutabi mosque.

Khilji’s  adopted the urbane culture with various Afghan culture, customs, and social traditions from the Ghaznavids over the long period of time. As a result of which the Khiljis court was multi-ethnic, with peoples from Persian, Indian, Arab, and Turkish descent worked in their court.
