On Friday, Trinamool Congress leader Mukul Roy stirred up a controversy at press conference and left the reporters stunned as he said that the Bharatiya Janata Party will win the upcoming bye-polls in West Bengal but then immediately corrected himself saying he actually meant the TMC. In the recently-concluded West Bengal Assembly elections, he won from Krishnanagar North assembly seat on a BJP ticket. He spent more than three years in the BJP, and was the former Union minister for railways. Before joining the BJP he was with the TMC and returned to the Trinamool Congress on June 11th this year.
While speaking to reporters at the Trinamool office on Friday, Roy said that the BJP will win the Assembly bye-polls in West Bengal and also the Tripura Assembly elections next year. “There is not an iota of doubt in that,” he said. Later, Roy corrected himself and said that the TMC will win. “The ‘Maa Mati Manush’ party (TMC) will remain the winner here and open its account in Tripura as well. “BJP will be nowhere in the state. They will be decimated. Mamata Banerjee will continue to helm Bengal,” he said.
His comment was greeted by BJP, which said that he had “unwittingly spoken the truth”.
Roy who had defected from TMC, joined the BJP in 2018 following differences with their supremo Mamata Banerjee. He returned to TMC shortly after his victory in the Krishnanagar North as a BJP candidate in May this year.
BJP spokesman Shamik Bhattacharya said “Mukulda has betrayed his voters in Krishnanagar North. He has lost his credibility. But he has spoken the truth. “The truth has perhaps come from his mouth as he is under tremendous mental stress,” He further said that BJP will continue to press for Roy’s disqualification as MLA.
Defending his father, Mukul Roy’s son Subhranshu Roy said that the TMC leader has been suffering from depression since his wife’s death recently. “There is immense sodium potassium imbalance in my father’s body that is leading to a lot of problems,” Subhranshu Roy said. “He is forgetting everything. We are really concerned about his health. His words should not be blown out of proportion.”
This controversial statement by Mukul Roy has been widely circulated and made viral. While some say he just wanted to be on the limelight, others did not take it seriously keeping in mind his mental health. Mukul seems to be making things easier for the BJP by promoting them instead of the TMC in West Bengal.
It is clear that despite being in the TMC he is confused after being so dedicated about the BJP. BJP appreciates Mukul’s statement and claims that he has spoken his heart out and he is the only courageous leader in the TMC. It is evident that although Mukul’s body is in TMC, his soul is still wandering in the BJP headquarters.
