The New York Times, or NYT is known for manipulating the voices of those who do not believe its ideas or ideology, in its recently titled report, “She Said She Married for Love. Her Parents Called It Coercion” says that the new laws across India, particularly in states ruled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party are trying to ban interfaith unions. Its a lie, in the long list of lies the global propaganda peddler spreads to malign India and the Narendra Modi-led BJP government.
Interfaith marriage has been practiced in India even before America discovered faith. Laws which have been legislated, are only against pressurized or forceful conversion. The NYT should check its facts before attempting to damage India’s image in the global arena.
As quoted by the NYT, “A spate of new laws across India, in states ruled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party, or B.J.P., are seeking to banish such unions altogether. While the rules apply broadly, the right-wing supporters in the party portray such laws as necessary to curb ‘love jihad,’ the idea that Muslim men marry women of other faiths to spread Islam”.
It follows with, “Critics contend that such laws fan anti-Muslim sentiment under a government promoting a Hindu nationalist agenda. Last year, lawmakers in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh passed legislation that makes religious conversion by marriage an offense punishable by up to 10 years in prison. So far, 162 people there have been arrested under the new law, although few have been convicted”.
The very concept of ‘love jihad’ has been misinterpreted and spread globally on NYT’s platform.

However, it is important to note that; The Uttar Pradesh State Law Commission, in its report submitted before the Chief Minister a year ago, had proposed such a law in the state citing rising incidents of forced religious conversions or conversions through fraudulent ways.
Even Gujarat implements the Freedom of Religion Act, 2003, which seeks to curb the “emerging trend in which women are lured to marriage for the purpose of religious conversion” as per its “statement of object.” The Gujarat Freedom of Religion Act, 2003, deals with religious conversion “through allurement, force or by misrepresentation or by any other fraudulent means”; while interfaith marriages are still very much celebrated across the country.

It is indeed disturbing to see anti India propaganda in foreign media. India is being labeled as fascist & Islamophobic whereas the reality is completely opposite. NYT has also been previously involved in trying to defame India and the Modi government in globally.
New York Times has been against India from the very beginning. It is the same portal that published an extremely racist cartoon when India successfully launched a mission to Mars on its debut mission in 2014. Newspapers like NYT are a disgrace to the vision of journalism and freedom of expression with their selective and extremely biased outrage.
