Kanpur, the city that used to be the textile hub of the country but was destroyed after the Communists got stronghold, is trying to reclaim its lost glory under the leadership of Yogi Adityanath. Kanpur once boasted of being the Manchester of the Eastern world. The Elgin Mill, Lal Imli Mill and J K Mill used to be the most prominent mills in the production of textiles and leather products in India. The Yogi government has focused on bringing textile companies to the cities of Uttar Pradesh, especially in Noida and Kanpur, given the fact textile factories can provide employment to a large number of people.
As per a report by UNI, in the last four years, the textile companies have invested 8,700 crore rupees in Uttar Pradesh with Kanpur, Noida, and Gorakhpur emerging as major investment destinations. A total of 66 new factories are to be opened in the state, of which 12 are already operational, employing more than 3,000 people, 18 are expected to start production next year, and another 18 are under construction.
“RP Polypacks and Kanpur Plastics Limited have set up textile factories in Kanpur city and Kanpur (Rural) at the cost of ₹150 crore ₹200 crore respectively and have already started production. Similarly, Sparsh India Private Limited has invested ₹600 crore for the construction of a plastic factory in Kanpur (Rural). Furthermore, Rimjhim Steel Company is building a steel rolling mill in Kanpur (Rural) at the cost of ₹550 crore,” a statement detailed about the status of the projects in Kanpur adding that the government is also working to set up non-polluting industries in multi-storeyed buildings in Kanpur.
Apart from investment in new textile factories, the Yogi government is also focusing on the export of handicrafts from the various districts of Uttar Pradesh. Handmade carpets from UP registered double-digit in the last few months.
Moreover, the government is also building a mega leather park that will employ more than 50 thousand people directly and 1.5 lakh people indirectly. “The Mega Leather Park, will, nevertheless, prove to be a game-changer for Kanpur. The 235 acres of land has already been acquired and the work is progressing rapidly on this project. The leather park will be built in Ramaipur village of Kanpur,” the government said adding that the ministry of commerce has already approved the establishment of the park.

In the last few years, UP has emerged as a favourable investment destination for national and international investors. The companies exiting from China are establishing units in cities such as Noida and Agra.
Uttar Pradesh has the existing capacity to replace China as the ‘factory of the world’ with a population of 22 crores and young demography. Unfortunately, the state had not had an investment-friendly government before, but with the arrival of Yogi, things have been moving rapidly. The Yogi government must be applauded for transforming the state from a nightmare for industrialists to heaven for law-abiding companies. We are hopeful that his untiring efforts for the state might soon bear fruits.
