Shashi Tharoor has called more than half of India racist, illiterate, poor and stupid

Shashi Tharoor – the walking Indian thesaurus with a clipped accent and a vocabulary as large as a whale’s diet has insinuated that all Indians who voted for the BJP are illiterate, low on social development, and of course, casteist; because they, according to him, practise untouchability. The Thiruvananthapuram MP sought to end 2020 with some social media attention, which is why a tweet shared by Tharoor on Thursday seemed to pass off the message that Indian voters who favoured the BJP were mental degenerates who practised untouchability.

The Congress MP said, “Of course I’ll be accused of elitism & pseudo-intellectual sneering, but can it be mere coincidence that the less people read, the lower literacy & social development they enjoy & the more they practice untouchability, the more they are inclined to vote for the BJP!?”. Tharoor’s tweet also contained four unverified, shoddy and unreliable graphics showing largely disputable statistics, which Tharoor used to claim that the BJP was benefiting due to the large-scale illiteracy of Indians.

This is not the first time that Shashi Tharoor has denigrated a large section of Indians. As a matter of fact, it has become a near-annual affair of sorts for the Congress MP to make offensive and derogatory remarks against the people of India, simply for not being as polished in the English language as he is. Earlier, Tharoor had once referred to Economy class flyers as the ‘cattle class’. As such, it becomes clear, with the latest tweets of Shashi Tharoor, of how he thinks of the average Indian and an ordinary BJP-voter.

To declare BJP voters, which constitute a major chunk of the Indian population, and attribute their political leanings upon factors like illiteracy, low social development and casteism, is an unthinkable overreach, even by the Congress party’s standards. However, being the ever-sinking ship that the Congress has been reduced to, Shashi Tharoor may have tweeted the offence to portray his own party as one which finds audience and support from among the educated masses of India, not to mention – elites like himself.

Seven years after 2014, the Congress and its elitist snobs are yet to come to terms with the fact that the BJP has a mass-appeal across India, cutting across various sections of society. A sense of ignorance and arrogant supremacism, however, has clouded the ability of people like Shashi Tharoor to accept the fact that India no longer resonates with elitism or the politics which uses imported accents.
