The trailer of Tandav was promising, to say the least. The nine-part series, however, as we now know, is a gigantic load of filthy trash. Despite a supposed ‘fascist’ regime at the helm of affairs in India, the series has been able to cultivate lies under the shroud of artistic freedom without any action by the ‘uparwalas’. Those responsible for maintaining the sanity of Indian airwaves are sleeping, and it is about time they wake up from their slumber. Anti-Hindu content has been flourishing for the past seven years and it is the need of the hour that Prakash Javadekar, the current Information and Broadcasting (I&B) Minister gets his act together.
Appeasement of those who are hell-bent to destroy you will achieve only one end – your destruction. The I&B Minister must realise this. Inaction against anti-Hindu elements of Indian society is tremendously emboldening them. Letting them have a free-run for so long was understandable, to an extent.
Perhaps, the government thought that such ‘cinema’ will die a natural death or will crumble under the incredible pressure of Hindu audiences boycotting it. Evidently, neither has happened, and it is now time to come down cracking hard on all such elements and send their vivid cinematic ideas into the grave of eternity.

Of course, action to the same effect must be taken by none other than I&B Minister Prakash Javadekar. The Minister must rein in the content of OTT platforms, and send a resounding message that defamatory anti-Hindu content, replete with insults of our deities is no longer something which will be let to pass. However, if precedent is anything to go by, Prakash Javadekar is most unlikely to initiate any action against such web series, OTT platforms and their creators. So, here’s a gentle reality check.

Nationalist Hindus vote for the BJP. Leftists, liberals, anarchists, secular-vote constituents, free-cinema lovers and the kind do not. The I&B Minister, himself a part of the BJP, should clarify whose interest does he work for? Sanity would dictate that he should work to ensure that the former grouping of people is satisfied with him and the party he is a part of. Yet, by not acting against grossly Hinduphobic content seasonally released on OTT platforms, the Minister is not doing himself any good and is instead working to ensure that Hindus begin seeing him as someone who does not dare to take on the anti-Hindu lobby of India.
There is only so much ordinary Hindus can do. At the most, they can uninstall/unsubscribe the OTT platforms, outrage on social media and call for the boycott of anti-Hindu and anti-national content. The government, meanwhile, has a greater role to play in ensuring that such content is nipped in the bud, and it pains me to say that they’ve been an unmitigated disaster on that front. Prakash Javadekar has much answering to do for the same. What is stopping him from initiating action against elements seeking to spread communal disharmony in India under the garb of artistic freedom?
Reportedly, the I&B Ministry is working to bring in a law facilitating self-regulation of OTT platforms. That is not enough. What is needed is hard action against creators dolling out filth like Tandav and Paatal Lok. The normalisation of sedition or rather, a glorification of the same has been seen in Tandav. Does the I&B Minister not think it to be his duty to act against the same? Muslims are hacked to death daily by the country’s policeman according to the web series. Is Prakash Javadekar fine with such blatant falsification of reality? Farmers’ protest is being suppressed by the government according to the creators of Tandav. Does the Minister think he’s doing his party supporters any good by not acting against such brazen lies?
Prakash Javadekar must wake up now. It is high time that motivated elements behind the trashy web series are reined in. Outraged Hindus can do only so much – outrage on social media. Real action must be taken by his ministry. In fact, web series like Tandav thrive on negative press and outrage. The government will be well advised to now dry them out to choke such content to death.
