‘Cancel Republic Day event as Johnson is not coming,’ Tharoor becomes a British poodle from being a British baiter all his life

Shashi Tharoor – the walking Indian thesaurus with a clipped accent and a vocabulary as large as a whale’s diet, after recently insinuated that all Indians who voted for the BJP are illiterate, low on social development and of course, casteist, apart from being practitioners of untouchability, has come up with another idea. The Thiruvananthapuram MP, in the backdrop of British Prime Minister Boris Johnson calling off his scheduled visit to India later this month, suggested that all Republic Day festivities must be cancelled as well.

Boris Johnson was slated to be this year’s chief guest for the annual Republic Day parade, but had to call off his visit to the country for now due to the tremendous surge of Covid-19 cases in the United Kingdom, forcing Britain into a complete lockdown once again. Why India should cancel its Republic Day celebrations for a rise in cases in the UK is something which many have not been able to decipher, but Shashi Tharoor continues to stand by his absurd statement.

“Now that @BorisJohnson’s visit to India this month has been cancelled due to the #COVIDSecondWave, & we don’t have a Chief Guest on #RepublicDay, why not go one step farther & cancel the festivities altogether? Getting crowds to cheer the parade as usual would be irresponsible,” Tharoor had tweeted.

Shashi Tharoor has been famous for being a British-baiter all his life. In fact, the former diplomat lambasting the Britishers for their atrocious colonisation of India and debating in favour of them paying owed reparations to Indians had brought fame to the Congress leader. However, his demand for cancellation of Republic day festivities as the UK’s Prime Minister cannot make it to this year’s parade is an incomprehensible proposition for many.

So ridiculous was Shashi Tharoor’s suggestion that even the Congress party distanced itself from the same. Without directly commenting on the tweet, the Congress at its party’s official meeting said it fully backed the idea of celebrating the “democratic and constitutional festivals”, the Hindu reported. Saying that such festivities should be celebrated with enthusiasm, Congress’ Alka Lamba added, “We have to take an oath that we will not allow our Constitution and institutions to be weakened at all. And I think, we can strengthen our commitment, faith and belief through our democratic festivals.”

Had Shashi Tharoor said that the Republic day parade can go on as planned, but without any spectators this year owing to the pandemic, perhaps we would have taken him a bit seriously. However, suggesting the cancellation of all festivities is plainly stupid. Tharoor, vouching for the Constitution on a daily basis and suggesting that the BJP government was weakening the constitutional ethos of the country,  to now suggest calling off celebrations related to the day when the Constitution of India was enforced is indeed hilarious.
