‘Middle finger for CJI?’ Kunal Kamra needs to be turned into an example for the entire nation

Putting on display his mental degeneracy once again, alleged comedian and far-left anarchist Kunal Kamra had on November 18 tweeted a picture with an outrageous caption, suggestive of the fact that he was showing the middle finger to India’s Chief Justice, and by implication, to the Supreme Court. Merely days ago, the same Kunal Kamra had gone through an insufferable breakdown after the country’s top court granted interim bail to senior journalist Arnab Goswami, who, in abuse of state power, was arrested late last month on the orders of the Maharashtra high command.

Now, the Attorney General has given his nod to a fresh set of contempt proceedings to be pursued against the comedian. The consent letter by Attorney General KK Venugopal under the Contempt of Courts Act was in reply to a complaint made by advocate Anuj Singh from Uttar Pradesh against Kunal Kamra’s contemptuous tweet. Granting his assent to the initiation of contempt proceedings against Kamra, the AG said, “The depiction of the two fingers, with the legend that he means the middle one, is to deliberately insult the Chief Justice of India, which would equally be an insult to the Supreme Court of India, which the Chief Justice heads.”

The second consent letter, which comes days after the Attorney General first gave the go-ahead for teaching Kunal Kamra a lesson, further added, “The tweet is grossly vulgar and obnoxious, and I have no doubt that it would tend to lower the authority of the Supreme Court as well as undermine the confidence that the litigant public have in the institution of the Supreme Court itself.”

Kunal Kamra has no respect for India, its democracy and the highest of its institutions. Yet, he relentlessly portrays himself as the mantle carrier of democratic and liberal ideals. For far too long, mental degenerates of Kamra’s kind have abused India and its institutions. It is about time that by setting an example out of the alleged comedian, the Supreme Court sends a message across, that criticism with legal limits will be accepted, however, obnoxious and motivating commentary over its autonomy will have severe consequences. The country’s top court must step in and tame the anarchical specimen that Kamra is, and make sure that he is taught a lesson to be remembered throughout.

To the same effect, in his first consent letter relating to contempt proceedings against Kunal, the AG had made it clear in no uncertain terms that attacking the Supreme Court of India ‘unjustifiedly’ and brazenly will attract punishment under the Contempt of Courts Act, 1971. Earlier, Kamra posted unsavoury comments regarding the Supreme Court and Justice DY Chandrachud in particular. He also circulated a morphed image of the Supreme Court premises, which was shown in a saffron hue, with the tricolour replaced with BJP’s flag. Having learnt no lessons, education of how to be a sane citizen must now be made available to Kamra immediately.
