The anti-China sentiment in the wake of Coronavirus pandemic and the Indo-China border tensions, is reaching to new heights in the country as people start boycotting anything that is Chinese. The ongoing border dispute along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Ladakh has further provided more gasoline to the whole cause. Now an app named ‘Remove China Apps’ developed by a Jaipur-based startup has sprung up in the market and has raked up more than 1 million downloads within two weeks of its launch.

The app is developed by OneTouchAppLabs and true to its name, the app does only one thing and that is, it identifies and deletes the Chinese apps on your phone. The app’s icon, a dragon and two brooms crossed behind it, points to the purpose of the application. It detects apps made in China on the users’ phones and provides a simple UI to remove them. The app has a 4.8 star rating on the google play store currently with over 100,000 reviews.

The app was well received by the netizens who took to twitter to appreciate the working of the app.

The app also gives voice to the clarion call of Sonam Wangchuck who had earlier called for avoiding Chinese goods and services. In a 9-minute long video, Wangchuk had called for an absolute boycott of all Made in China products, including their apps, software, and hardware.

He released a video titled, China Ko Jawaab: Sena Degi Bullet Se, Nagrik Dengey Wallet Se,” or “An answer to China: Army will answer with the bullet, Citizens will answer wth the wallet.’

Sonam called upon people to give up Chinese software within a week, and all of their hardware within a year. Besides, he also pointed out that China was indulging in aggressive posturing not just with India, but all other neighbouring nations as a result of fear in the CCP that there is a brewing sentiment among the Chinese public to dislodge the current regime.

The video has gained a lot of traction on social media platforms and one of the big names that supported Sonam’s cause was celebrity Milind Soman who instantly quit TikTok after watching the video.

Actor Arshad Warsi also put out a tweet vowing to never use Chinese products.

Sonam Wangchuk is the same man whose life was emulated by Aamir Khan on the silver screen in the super hit movie ‘3 Idiots’. A resident of Ladakh, Sonam is an engineer who has heralded a transformation in Ladakh, reforming education in a way that has won him international praise.

Recently, the feud between YouTube star roaster CarryMinati and TikTok had snowballed into a boycott campaign against the Chinese cringe video-making platform—TikTok. When dastardly videos that promoted acid attacks, animal abuse, sexual abuse, rape, and jihad emanated from the TikTok world, people took to the play store to report the app and give it low ratings. Within a week TikTok’s ratings fell to lowly 1.3 stars and it was looking like a lost battle for the ByteDance owned app.

It was only after Google intervened and deleted over 7 million negative reviews that TikTok got back on its feet.

While China keeps its market closed to apps from around the world, be it Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, it has entered deeply into foreign markets which have unsuspectingly given it access despite the security concerns, and data extraction, which Chinese companies use to create more apps and to also push the Chinese Communist Party’s agenda in terms of PR and censorship.

The Remove China App is a novel initiative aimed at deleting Chinese apps that somehow have found their way in a user’s phone and the app with its simple UI has been doing the task effectively.
