After Amethi, Raebareli could slip out of Congress’ hands with Aditi Singh on Yogi’s side

Sonia Gandhi in trouble

Aditi Singh, Sonia Gandhi, Congress

Aditi Singh is one name which has been doing the rounds of the news airwaves ever since the bus scam of the Congress party in Uttar Pradesh under the command of Priyanka Gandhi Vadra came to the fore. Aditi Singh, an MLA from Raebareli’s Sadar assembly constituency in UP, has been suspended by the Congress for daring to speak against the dynast and her low-level politics at the time of a pandemic.

Terming Priyanka Vadra’s contentious claims as a ‘cruel joke’ on the migrants, Aditi Singh said most of the buses that were supposed to be sent for the migrant labourers were small and in dilapidated conditions and therefore making such frivolous statements was totally uncalled for, given the global crisis we are in.

For speaking out against Priyanka, Congress suspended the crucial key to Sonia Gandhi’s victory from Raebareli in the Lok Sabha elections of 2019.

Aditi Singh is that key. Short-sightedness and inflated ego’s of the dynasts are now about to cost them their lone seat from Uttar Pradesh in the 2024 general elections. Congress on Wednesday suspended Aditi Singh from the position of general secretary of the women’s wing of the party, citing “indiscipline”.

Perhaps no sane and politically sound individual remains in the Congress. What else explains suspending and initiating anti-disciplinary action against an MLA who can destroy Sonia Gandhi’s, or as a matter of fact, the Congress’ future electoral prospects in the state? Are we overestimating Aditi Singh? Absolutely not.

Sonia Gandhi’s victory from Raebareli this time round came with a rider. Her victory margin contracted from 3,52,713 votes in 2014 to a meagre 1,67,178 votes in 2019. A drop of close to 1.8 lakh votes! This, even as the BJP fielded a mediocre candidate against her from Raebareli. Imagine what volcanoes could erupt the day the saffron party resolves to unseat the political godmother of India from her parliamentary seat. Aditi Singh, who has now been suspended, will ensure the same.

Aditi Singh is a dynast as well. Not belonging to as brazen a dynasty like the Gandhi’s, nevertheless, she commands immense respect and affection among her people in Raebareli. Her father, Akhilesh Singh, was a five-time MLA from the assembly seat she currently represents in Raebareli. Singh had won as Congress candidate from the Raebareli Sadar constituency three times consecutively. He was expelled from the Congress Party in 2003. In 2007, he won as an independent candidate. The man commanded immense respectability in the entirety of Raebareli, and was a strongman all by himself, capable of swinging elections. He later mended his ties with the Congress, which the grand old party now seems keen to sever once again, this time with his daughter.

In 2017, Aditi Singh won from the Raebareli Sadar assembly constituency by a margin of 95,000 votes, even in the face of a massive Modi wave in the state. If Aditi Singh could survive a Modi wave of that magnanimity, for her to put an end to the Congress’ fortunes in Raebareli will not be much of an uphill task.

Aditi Singh came out in total support of the Modi government’s act of abrogating Article 370 in August last year. Again, in 2019 itself, Aditi Singh had defied the Congress’ call to boycott a special assembly session called by the Adityanath government. Further, she did not participate in a foot march organised by Priyanka Vadra to mark Mahatma Gandhi’s 150th birth anniversary.

Speaking to Times of India in the backdrop of her suspension from the Congress’ Women’s Wing, Aditi Singh said that she admired the working style of Yogi Adityanath. She further said that he is doing an extremely good job in the state, and his handling of the anti-CAA protests was particularly praiseworthy.

In the same interview, the rebel MLA reminded Sonia Gandhi that the maximum number of votes, which ensured the Congress supremo’s victory as an MP from Raebareli once again, came from her assembly segment.

Murmurs are abound, that BJP will be fielding Aditi Singh from Raebareli in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. If at all Sonia Gandhi adamantly fights yet another election in 2024, she could meet the same fate which her son did last year in Amethi. Aditi Singh is a force to be reckoned with and has a foothold in Raebareli paralleled to no other.

Her joining the BJP is not a question of if, rather of when. Given her public statements and suspension from the Congress’ Women’s Wing, it is only a matter of time before she jumps ship and begins working on writing the epitaph of Congress in Uttar Pradesh.

The Congress is a non-existent entity in UP even as of this day. The lone seat which it bagged in the 2019 election was that of Raebareli, courtesy Sonia Gandhi. Now that reports suggest that Aditi Singh will be fielded from Raebareli by the BJP in 2024, the Congress is as good as invisible in Uttar Pradesh. The antics and cheap politics of Priyanka Vadra are going to be no match when Aditi Singh gets to the ground and begins cutting Congress votes from under the godmother’s nose.
