The Swag of Syed Akbaruddin – Impeccable dressing, terrific oratory and wicked sense of humour

Syed Akbaruddin, India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN), has once again impressed with his wit and eloquence. It has been under his leadership that India has not only blocked Pakistan’s frequent attempts to internationalise the Kahsmir issue, but has also embarrassed the terror country over its lies every now and then.

This time around, India has hit out at Pakistan over the Islamic Republic’s attempts at “spewing venom and false narratives” at the United Nations every time it tries to rake up the Kashmir issue at the global forum.

India’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, K Nagaraj Naidu who seemed in no mood to let Pakistan get away lightly, and the diplomat’s wicked sense of humour was on display yet again. He said, “Just like a fish takes to water, one delegation has again taken to hate speech. Every time this delegation speaks, it spews venom and false narratives of monumental proportions.”

He added, “It’s extremely surprising that a country that has completely decimated its minority population talks about protecting minorities. Pakistan’s practice of using false pretenses to distract from addressing the malaise that afflicts it has run its course. Pakistan needs to reflect that there are no takers for its false rhetoric and should get down to the normal business of diplomacy.”

India’s comments come only days after Akbaruddin absolutely humiliated Beijing and Islamabad, after China’s proposal seeking ‘closed-door consultation’ at the UNSC found no takers.

The diplomat had said, “We are glad that the effort was viewed as a distraction and it was pointed out by many friends that bilateral mechanisms are available to raise and address issues that Pakistan may have in its ties with India.”

Pakistan and its all weather ally failed in their nefarious attempts, and this is when an unforgiving Akbaruddin took to Twitter mocking them over yet another failed attempt to internationalise the Kashmir issue.

He tweeted, “Today @UN…our flag is flying high. Those that launched a “False Flag” effort got a stinging response from our many friends…”

Earlier this month, Pakistan’s UN envoy, Munir Akram had gone out of his way to raise the issue of Article 370 abrogation by India. He claimed that it was the “first step” in India’s scheme of things to suppress Muslims.

The Pakistani diplomat even went on to threaten India with war mongering by stating that Pakistan was ready to “repsond resolutely” in case of any “military adventure” by India.

Akram, probably didn’t know that he was setting himself up for a major embarrassment at Akbaruddin’s hands. The Indian diplomat gave a befitting reply to the Pakistani envoy, saying, “My simple response to Pakistan is even though it is late, neighbour, heal thyself of your malaise. There are no takers here for your malware.”

But this is not the first time that Islamabad has faced the wrath of Syed Akbaruddin. Recently, Pakistan PM, Imran Khan had circulated fake news against India on Twitter, by trying to pass off an old video of an incident in Bangladesh as pogrom of Muslims in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.

The Indian diplomat commented, “Repeat Offenders…#Oldhabitsdiehard” At a time when the Pakistan PM was humiliated in front of the entire world, Akbaruddin’s tweet ensured that Pakistan’s agony got further aggravated.

Syed Akbaruddin was at his very best last year during a press conference that was held after the closed door meeting of the UNSC on India’s move of abrogating Article 370 in New York in August 2019.

The closed doors meeting had been initiated at the behest of the hostile neighbour Pakistan and its all weather ally China. His answers to a Pakistani journalist, in particular, brought his sense of humour and wittiness to the fore.

The Pakistani journalist had asked, “When will you begin a dialogue with Pakistan?” In his hilarious response, Akbaruddin had stepped away from the podium and walked up to the senior Pakistani journalist and told him, “So let me begin by coming across to you. Give me your hand.” He had also said, “Let me tell you we have already extended our hand of friendship by saying we are committed to the Simla agreement.” Continuing further, Akbaruddin had said, “Let us wait for a response on that from the Pakistani side.”

Taking a dig at Permanent Representatives of China and Pakistan, Zhang Jun and Maleeha Lodhi, who had refused to answer questions from reporters after reading their statement, the Indian diplomat had stated, “People who came here, just walked off. (But) as the representative of an open democracy, I am ready to answer (your questions.)”

Akbaruddin’s response had then drawn a lot of applause for handling the joint effort by Pakistan and China in the most adroit manner. He had also absolutely demolished Pakistan’s diplomatic offensive during the press conference with his iconic answers.

Ever since the press conference last year, Akbaruddin has emerged as a fine Indian diplomat who with his wit and humour, doesn’t mind embarrassing and virtually trolling those who spew venom and hate against India.

With Syed Akbaruddin at the helm of affairs as India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Indian diplomacy is certainly in safe hands.
