After the violence and disruption that broke out in JNU, Union Home Minister Amit Shah has called the representatives from JNU for a discussion over the violence. He has inquired about the situation from the Delhi Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal. “The home minister spoke to the LG and requested him to initiate discussions with representatives from the JNU,” an official said.
The telephonic conversation between the home minister and the LG came a day after violence broke out inside the JNU campus.
According to media reports, HM Amit Shah had inquired about the JNU violence from Delhi Police Commissioner Amulya Patnaik. Union Home Minister Amit Shah had ordered the Delhi Police to take all necessary action to control the situation in the Jawaharlal Nehru University where widespread violence in the evening left many students, including girls, and teachers injured.
Amit Shah directed the commissioner to institute an inquiry under a Joint commissioner of police (JCP) rank officer to investigate the matter as the left organisations and the ABVP blamed each other for the violence. He also sought the report as soon as possible.
Confirming this Home ministry tweeted, “Union Home Minister has spoken to Delhi Police Commissioner over JNU violence and instructed him to take necessary action. Hon’ble Minister has also ordered an enquiry to be carried out by a Joint CP level officer and asked for a report to be submitted as soon as possible,” the Home Ministry said in a tweet.
Notably, HM Amit Shah had also directly monitored the recent fee-hike protest as the crisis remained unresolved. HRD Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’, who was held captive by the students at AICTE building, had not been able to resolve the issue. The matter had become so big that, Home minister Amit Shah had personally discussed the issue with the HRD minister.
Surprisingly, violence broke out in JNU on Sunday as masked men armed with sticks and rods attacked students and teachers and damaged property on the campus, prompting the administration to call in police which conducted a flag march. At least 28 people were injured as chaos prevailed on the campus for nearly two hours.
Testimonies of injured students and ABVP activists reveal how the masked goons targeted ABVP students also. One of the injured students has revealed how the leftist goons went berserk beating up students and ABVP activists with sticks, stones and even iron rods.
“Around four to five hundred members of the left wing gathered around the Periyar hostel, vandalised the hostel and forcibly entered the hostel to thrash the ABVP activists inside,” ABVP’s JNU unit Pres Durgesh told IANS before news of more violence broke out.
Post the fee-hike protests, a registration boycott had been initiated by the left ruled JNUSU and had been going on for over a week. On January 3, a group of students in masks forcibly entered the office of the Center for Information System, switched off the power supply, forcibly evicted all technical staff & made servers dysfunctional with the intent to not allow online registrations to take place. Yesterday was supposedly the last day for registration, and many students had flocked in despite facing hostilities by left goons allegedly from SFI, AISA led by JNUSU itself.
The administration’s version also seems reliable and consistent because the left-wingers at the university had resorted to disruptive activities on January 3 and January 4 when those opposed to registration had stopped the wifi service in the JNU campus. The administration’s version is thus well corroborated.
Violence at the University was a result of the leftist diktat against registration. But when hundreds of students defied that diktat, the anti-registration lobby resorted to violence. This version is also corroborated by Raj Shekhar Jha from TOI.

Instead of helping the administration in establishing order, the left ecosystem promptly started protesting and targeting the central government for the violence. Liberals such as Swara Bhaskar and Zeeshan Ayyub started urging the people to come out on the streets against the government. In a statement issued by JNUSU has even called the V-C M Jagadesh Kumar a “mobster who perpetuates violence in the university”. This further exposes the radical and violent agenda of the left organisations, they are evidently using the university to stage their propaganda. Unlawful activities have become an everyday occurrence in JNU. From anti-national slogans to illegal trafficking banned drugs, holding the Vice-Chancellor and professor hostage for hours, JNU has been in news for all the wrong reasons for years. Home Minister Amit Shah is expected to take the culprits to task and bring an end to the violence, and the unease which has plagued the university for months.
