Naseeruddin Shah, who has been infamous for making controversial, objectionable remarks about fellow actors and other personalities has once again gone out of his way to create a massive controversy. This time around he made some rather outrageous remarks about his A Wednesday co-star, Anupam Kher.

While giving an interview to a leftist portal, The Wire, Shah was speaking in the context of the recent anti CAA protests. It was at that point that Naseeruddin Shah made utterly bizarre remarks about Anupam Kher, who is known to be a supporter of the present dispensation.

Shah said, “Someone like Anupam Kher has been very vocal. I don’t think he needs to be taken seriously. He’s a clown. Any number of his contemporaries from NFD and FTII can attest to his sycophantic nature. It’s in his blood, he can’t help it.”

On the other hand, the 69-year old actor had rather kind words for Deepika Padukone, who has recently drawn fire for visiting the JNU campus ostensibly for showing solidarity with students following campus violence. He said, “You have to laud the courage of a girl like Deepika who is in the top firmament and yet takes a step like this. Even if she has a lot to lose.”

Naseeruddin Shah’s remark naturally led to a massive outrage, and Anupam Kher too has given him a befitting and stern reply in a Twitter video.

In the Twitter video, Kher said, “If you could criticise Dilip Kumar, Amitabh Bachchan, Rajesh Khanna, Shah Rukh Khan or Virat Kohli, then I’m sure I’m in great company. And none of them has taken your statements seriously. Because we all know this is not you speaking. The substances you have been consuming for years have taken away your sense of judging what is right and what is not.”

Kher also said, “You know what’s in my blood? Hindustan,” thus hitting back at Shah over the latter’s ” it’s in his blood jibe.” While Naseeruddin Shah claims that Kher has an inherently sycophantic nature, the fact remains that it is Shah who seems to have attitudinal problems.

Over the recent past, he almost always had an issue with other actors, or even with a particular sportsperson. He finds Kher to be a sycophant, and not very long ago he had found Rajesh Khanna to be a “poor actor”.

Naseeruddin Shah has emerged as a highly insecure personality who simply doesn’t seem to like successful people. This is why he has also criticised successful actors like Dilip Kumar and Amitabh Bachchan.

Not just Bollywood actors, Shah has an issue with successful people even beyond Bollywood. Maybe, this is why Shah, who as humble as he himself is, had called Indian cricket captain, Virat Kohli “arrogant”.

Perhaps, the last time he had shown any compassion for anyone was when he had supported the mercy petition for 1993 Mumbai serial blasts convict, Yakub Memon.

Shah’s unwarranted and out of the way criticism for almost every successful person demonstrates his cynical, frustrated, almost psycho persona.
