Randeep Surjewala lies about the price of LPG cylinders under Modi govt, forgets sky high inflation during UPA tenure

In what can be described as a major self-goal for the grand old party, Congress leader, Randeep Singh Surjewala has committed a major faux pax by tweeting the current price of non-subsidised LPG cylinders and the price of subsidised LPG cylinders as on May 16, 2014, when the tenure Congress-led UPA government came to an end. He then argued that the price of LPG cylinders has gone up by Rs. 302.5.

Actually, the price of non-subsidised LPG cylinders have gone up by Rs. 77 and after the hike, the price is Rs. 716.50. The Congress is desperate to make a comeback on India’s political landscape. Therefore, the senior Congress leader went on to claim that the price of cylinders as on May 16, 2014 was Rs. 414, and now it is Rs. 716.50. He claimed that there has been a rise of Rs. 302.50 since the Modi government came at the helm of affairs. What Surjewala obviously concealed was the fact that he has compared the current price of non-subsidised cylinder with the price of subsidised cylinder as on May 16, 2014.

If we make a real, genuine and truthful comparison of LPG cylinder prices, then it only exposes the fact of sky high double-digit inflation and exorbitant prices during the Congress-led UPA rule. As on May 1, 2014, the price of a non-subsidised LPG cylinder was Rs. 928. Therefore, even after the recent hike of Rs. 77 the price of LPG cylinder has actually witnessed a drastic fall of Rs. 212 since the Modi government came at the helm of affairs.

And if we compare the price of non-subsidised LPG cylinders as on January 1, 2014, then it makes matters even worse for the Congress. At that time, the price of LPG cylinder was Rs. 1241. This was months before the Congress was booted out of power by the country’s electorate. The Congress-led UPA government seemed to have somehow managed to bring down the prices a little bit only towards the fag end of its tenure, ahead of elections.

With a bizarre tweet comparing the price of LPG cylinders during the UPA regime and the incumbent regime in a flawed and misleading manner, Surjewala has only put his party in a spot of bother. He has ended up reviving the memory of exorbitant prices during the days of the UPA government. This also further tarnishes the image of the Congress. The fact that a senior Congress leader went on to spread fake news only exposes the level of desperation brewing within the Congress.

It is important to mention here that Surjewala has come under fire for spreading falsehoods in the recent past as well. In the month of March, Surjewala made a false claim that former Union Minister and BJP MP Kalraj Mishra of threatening to shoot people who were creating a disturbance when he was speaking. In reality, no such remark was made by the BJP MP and a video clip of the event made it clear that Surjewala had only made a fake allegation. It is because of such disastrous tactics that the Congress is continuously facing decimation across the country. However, it seems that the grand old party is no mood to learn lessons from its catastrophic mistakes.
