Sonia Gandhi appointed as interim Congress chief

It is said that habits die hard, and Congress in the country is the biggest of such example. Reaching new heights of hypocrisy, the party has now appointed Sonia Gandhi as the interim Congress chief, after vehement announcements that the Gandhis will “disassociate” themselves from the party. This decision was taken in a 2nd meeting of the Congress Working Committee yesterday.

After the results of the Lok Sabha election, an obviousness of voters rejecting dynasts of various parties and instead choosing to vote the hard-working, able candidates were visible as day. After this, Rahul Gandhi seemingly in an effort to accept this mindset of the voters decided to resign from the Congress Party president and instead appoint a “non Gandhi president”.

In this regard, since the past 2 ½ months, several names including Ashok Gehlot, Mallikarjun Kharge, Sachin Pilot and Milind Deora had emerged as possible candidates for the post of Congress chief. However, months of discussion couldn’t finalise them.

Along with this, Rahul Gandhi after resigning was keen that a non-Gandhi leader should become the next president of the party and in this regard had rejected the party leaders’ numerous requests to withdraw or reconsider his resignation. The Gandhi scion had, however, remained firm on his resolute.

Thus, for the first time in decades, it was believed that Congress might witness a non-Gandhi at the helm. Though it was widely perceived that the new president will just be another sycophant of the Gandhis, the fact that such an individual was being appointed in the first place was viewed as a huge initiative by the party. A section of individuals was considering Priyanka Gandhi’s candidature, but these were just speculations, constantly being refuted by the Gandhis vehemently claiming to be away from the immediate leadership of the party.

This was further reinforced by the mother-son duo’s decision to refuse to be a part of the Congress Working Committee’s process to select the next party president. Sonia Gandhi stated, “The process to choose the president has started. Rahul and I are not part of this process. Our names were included by mistake.”

Thus, the citizens were taken aback when it was announced that Sonia Gandhi will be the interim chief. The decision, however, shouldn’t come as a surprise, given the Congress’ history.

On Sunday, after the Congress workers accepted Rahul Gandhi’s resignation, after many requests for reconsideration, Sonia Gandhi was picked in place of her son. This is entirely absurd and shows that the Gandhis have just taken the citizens for granted.

The party leaders’ sycophancy with the ‘Gandhi tag’ has given them unnecessary delusions of grandeur, and making them has a sense of entitlement. Even though the entire party, right from the leaders to the workers to the volunteers knew that Rahul Gandhi is not the most able of leaders, he was kept in the leadership position due to the “Gandhi tag”.

Now, after months of deliberations, the party is unable to find a single competent leader who can lead the party and has returned to the mother. In 2017, Sonia Gandhi, believing her son to come off age had passed over the crown to the prince. Now that the prince has proven his severe incompetence, the Queen Regent has taken over the power and installed herself at the helm once again.
