Joining in the efforts by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to clean up the bureaucracy of corrupt and inefficient officials, Union Minister of Home Affairs Amit Shah is also set to carry out similar ‘clean up’ drive in the home ministry. According to media reports, the Ministry’s Under Secretary Vigilance has prepared a ‘3-K’ formulae to evaluate performance of government officials in the ministry. 3-K formulae which stands for Kaamkazz(work), Character and Corruption, will be used as the basis to sort out the officials which are considered fit for the service.

According to the reports this 3-K formula will first be used to access the performance of junior level officials. According to an official of the home ministry 3-K formula will not only be used to evaluate postings but past record of the employees will also be looked at. The ministry is also planning to take strict action on officials against whom sexual harassment allegations have been made. A special committee has been made to look into such cases.

Action will also be taken against officials who have been notoriously holding files, cases of several ministry documents leaking over Whatsapp have also surfaced, for such cases the CCTV footages of the ministry are being observed. The ministry is also planning to boot out such officials who have been found involved in similar cases of inefficiency and corruption.

These tough steps by the home ministry come days after the central government asked several senior tax officials to retire over serious allegations of misconduct such as fraud, extortion and sexual harassment. The officials, all from the Indian Revenue Services (IRS), included commissioners – one of the topmost ranks in the Income Tax department; joint commissioners, additional commissioners, deputy commissioners and assistant commissioners.

Several central ministries have been plagued by inefficiency and corruption for long, now these steps to identify and weed out such official is surely a big push for the ongoing programs of the government. According to sources, there are several officials in the ministries which hardly operate from their offices and are mostly found in the corridors of the ministries. Several officials have made their camps at several positions not because of their efficiency or work but due to their relations with other senior officials.

However, for Amit Shah, this is just the beginning and a series of challenges await to be addressed. Under the leadership of PM Modi and ex-MHA Rajnath Singh, India has witnessed huge strides forward in multiple dimensions of the security situation in India. Be it the insurgency in Northeast India or radical terrorism in Kashmir, our forces have been at their optimum, protecting India’s interests. Given his experience in Gujarat as the state home minister, the term of Amit Shah will surely see some conclusive steps, adding to the previous developments. However, steps by the government to clean up central ministries of inefficient and corrupt officials are sure to boost other programs too.
