In a big development in Madhya Pradesh, the BJP has written a letter to Governor Anandiben Patel claiming that Kamal Nath government is in minority. BJP has further demanded that a special session of the assembly should be convened.

Leader of Opposition in the state Gopal Bhargava claimed that the Congress government in Madhya Pradesh is in minority. “It (Congress government) will fall on its own, I don’t believe in horse-trading but I feel the time has come and it will have to go soon,” Bhargava further added.
The development comes after the exit polls declared a sweeping win for the BJP in the state. Out of total 29 seats in the states, the exit polls have given BJP as much as 24 seats. The Congress has been reduced to five seats barely months after the party formed the government in the state.
The Congress after failing to get a complete majority in the 2018 assembly elections got support of 2 BSP, 1 SP and 4 Independent MLA’s and formed the government. The Congress has 113 members of its own and has 120 along with the BSP, Samajwadi Party and four independents.
Recently, Mayawati had threatened to withdraw support from Congress. The BSP candidate from Guna, Lokendra Singh Rajput, had quit the party recently and declared his support for Congress’ Jyotiraditya Scindia. Mayawati had termed this betrayal and threatened to withdraw support from the Kamal Nath government.
The newly elected government from its first day has been on the back foot over Urea shortage in 18 Districts. Experts relate Kamal Nath’s government’s diminishing popularity to the non fulfillment of polling promises like unemployment allowance, the deteriorating law and order situation in Madhya Pradesh and the rampant minority appeasement. The rising unpopularity of the party in the state has consequently further dampened the electoral prospects of the Congress for the 2019 general elections.
Loss of public sentiment can also be a catalyst in swaying the independents away from the Congress government, leaving open ground for the BJP with 109 members, to garner support for the formation of the government.
It is not clear on what basis BJP is claiming that Kamal Nath government is not in majority anymore but it seems BJP is confident about its claims and have demanded a special session of the assembly for a floor test. If Kamal Nath government fails to prove majority during the floor test, it would mark the end of a very short and chaotic rule of Congress in the state.
