Exit polls have just come out and the citizens have already foreseen a thumping BJP led NDA victory in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Not only the citizens; the political parties too, are keen to be on the winning side. Out of the parties who haven’t been a part of an alliance in these elections, Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has come out with its desire to be a part of NDA.

In the exit polls, BJP led NDA has got more than 300 seats in the various polls conducted by media organizations. Looking at the state of Odisha, BJP has been given 10-13 seats by most of the polls and BJD has been given an average of 7-11 seats. This has clearly indicated BJP’s edge, even in the state of Odisha.

BJD senior spokesperson Amar Patnaik has stated that if NDA forms the government at the centre, BJD could be a part of the government. He stated, “We could support only those combinations and only those coalitions that would support our legitimate demands for Orissa. Once that is taken care of, we could be a part of NDA, we could be a part of any other combination.”

BJP and BJD have always been on amicable terms, which became apparent during PM Modi’s trip to Odisha. During the natural calamity, the centre and the state had acted in conformity, dealing with the disaster pro-actively. The focus was on the citizens and minimizing the damage. In this regard, the state police and the CRPF had coordinated together. PM Modi had been personally involved in the disaster and had reviewed the strategies which reassured the Odisha state government that the NDA government was much concerned about Odisha. After dealing with the tragedy, PM Modi had even praised the Odisha CM and BJD leader Naveen Patnaik for his meticulous planning and role in effectively tackling the situation. After this, Naveen Parnaik had written to PM Modi, thanking him for all his help in the wake of the disaster.

The cyclone was just an example of how well the BJD and the BJP government work together as allies, in furtherance to their common issue. After the exit polls, it is clear that NDA is going to form the central government in 2019-2014. So the party is interested to be on the winning side. Over and above that, with BJD’s tremendous satisfaction and concurrence with BJP, it is clear that the Naveen Patnaik led party is joining hands with the right alliance.
