‘Will mix pebbles in sweets for PM Modi so that it breaks his teeth’, says Mamata

Mamata, PM Modi, sweets

In a bizarre statement bound to invite severe criticism, West Bengal CM, Mamata Banerjee has stated that she would make sweets for PM Modi from the soil and mix pebbles within it just like raisins and cashews are mixed in laddu and give them to PM Modi so that it breaks his teeth.

The TMC supremo gave this bizarre statement about PM Modi after the latter stated that he has many “good friends” in the opposition during a recent interview with Bollywood actor, Akshay Kumar. Prime Minister Modi had also stated that Mamata Banerjee sends kurtas personally chosen by her and also sends sweets for him. PM Modi’s remarks were highly appreciable as they displayed true statesmanship on his part and also made it clear that while there can be political differences, such differences do not essentially translate into personal differences.

However, in the current political atmosphere, the opposition leaders have given up on facets like courtesy in their desperation to somehow defeat PM Modi. The TMC supremo clearly failed to appreciate the depth and the intent behind PM Modi’s statement. Therefore, Mamata Banerjee clearly went overboard in her reaction and ended up giving a bizarre statement.

Mamata Banerjee went on to allege that the PM was making a “political issue” of the “courtesy” shown by her. She said, “There is nothing wrong in sending kurtas and sweets as we send gifts to many important people during Durga Puja. He is trying to make a political issue by divulging this information.”

However, one fails to understand why Mamata Banerjee feels that PM Modi is making a political issue of “courtesy” shown by her. PM Modi was only making it clear that he does have friends in the opposition notwithstanding the political differences. As such he did not make any political remark about the West Bengal chief minister or any other leader.

The West Bengal Chief Minister made these bizarre remarks while speaking at a rally in Asansol. It seems that her comments were fuelled by the manner in which the Congress tried taking a dig at the West Bengal CM following PM Modi’s comments saying that their “friendly relationship” has been proved.

It is highly unfortunate how such innocuous and appreciable remarks of PM Modi were frowned upon by the West Bengal CM. While PM Modi’s remarks displayed his statesmanship, Mamata’s remarks have made it clear that the opposition leaders do not really deserve a courteous relationship with PM Modi.
