2019 General Elections: Two sportsmen in politics, different prospects

Gambhir, Vijender

As new developments in the Lok Sabha elections are unfolding every day, the news of Gautam Gambhir’s candidature from the East Delhi constituency on a BJP ticket comes as a major one. Congress party, on the other hand, has decided to field Vijender Singh, the first boxer to win an Olympic medal, from the South Delhi constituency. While both of them belong to the field of sports and have established themselves as great athletes in their respective fields, Gambhir has an edge over Vijender Singh.

Gautam Gambhir joined BJP at the start of the month of April. While Gambhir is known to be a fierce batsman and has brought glory to India with his performance on the pitch in many world tournaments, his political thoughts have also impressed his fans. Gambhir, on various occasions, has shown his alignment of thoughts with that of the party’s. Everyone remembers how he shutdown separatist comments of opposition leaders. The people of East Delhi are bound to support this dedicated cricketer, as they know that his dedication towards his profession would also reflect in his political career as well.

Vijender Singh’s political debut is not going to help Congress win in Delhi. In the last Lok Sabha elections, Congress was reduced to dust. In this election as well, the BJP is ready to smash the Congress out of the ‘ring’. Congress Party, losing the opportunity of an alliance with AAP, has further weakened its chances of winning any seat in Delhi. The boxer’s fame will not be able to save the sinking ship of Congress in Delhi elections.

Fielding Gautam Gambhir from the East Delhi constituency is a masterstroke played by the BJP. With reliance on his popularity among every section of the society, it is evident that the cricketer turned politician will end up with a big victory. Vijender Singh may not get a good start as the Congress party is already burdened under the weight of poor performances and failing strategies.

Two sports personalities from two different constituencies are representing the biggest political rivals in the capital of the country. It is needless to say that BJP will be creating the history once again. However, the Congress has lost every bit of confidence of the people in Delhi. Vijender Singh can only help them in South Delhi and this cannot change Congress’ fate in these upcoming elections.
