Gurugram Police denies any communal angle in Gurugram incident

On Thursday, when the entire nation was celebrating Holi, a horrific incident took place in Gurugram. According to media reports, a brawl took place between two groups. However, certain political parties, in a bid to increase communal hatred before the upcoming elections and to garner support through segregation have communalized the Gurugram incident. Various media portals promptly jumped the gun and termed this incident as yet another example of fictitious ‘intolerance’.

The brawl happened over a game of cricket match at around 5 pm. According to one of the victims, Shahid, the family was playing cricket on the street outside their house. A group of 6- 7 drunken men told the victim’s family to not play cricket in the street. When they continued to play, the men were joined by over 40 youths who attacked the male members of the family with batons, iron rods, hockey sticks, and water pipes, the cops said. In an attempt to save themselves, the victims then rushed into their house but some of the attackers managed to barge in and beat them. The ones who couldn’t enter threw stones at the house.

The victim family alleged the police took about 40 minutes to come to their rescue, though they kept calling on the help number. By then, the attackers had escaped.

“We have registered a case of attempt to murder and other relevant sections against the attackers at Bhondsi Police station. We have arrested six goons and efforts are on to identify others with the help of the video,” ACP Shamsher Singh said.

In light of the gruesome incident, the Gurugram police maintain that the brawl was triggered over a game of cricket. Nevertheless, the political outfits in our country that aren’t even fully aware of the circumstances of the incident are set to communalise the incident and are calling it an attack by the “Hindutva Outfit”.

For lack of coherent issues, in an effort to campaign for the up-coming elections, Rahul Gandhi has been set on criticising the current government. His speeches, rallies and even his social media tweets are filled with PM Modi/BJP condemnation. So much so, that in a mob attack by a group of drunken men, the Congress party president is trying to drag BJP in the middle of it. He along with Arvind Kejriwal is all but suggesting that the Prime Minister perhaps orchestrated the incident.

The horrific incident is illegal and immoral and the perpetrators should be dealt with under the authority of the law, condemned to the highest punishment permissible. But the political parties should not fray away from the crux of an issue to gain some votes. Every day numerous assaults are committed by drunken men and the perpetrators are dealt with in accordance to the provisions of the law. Just because the family happened to be the followers of a particular religion, they are being marginalized and segregated. By these tactics the politicians are inculcating a deep psychological impact on the Muslim citizens of India and are actually making them feel unsafe in the country. These remarks by Rahul Gandhi and others are spreading pseudo intolerance and Islamophobia merely for their own personal political benefits.
