Ruskin Bond, a renowned author has said that India has become much cleaner after the adoption of Swachh Bharat Mission. But old habits die hard and there are challenges in addressing the issue appropriately, he added. Ruskin made this statement while he was addressing the audience at the inauguration of the second edition of the Tata Steel Jharkhand Literary Meet (JLM), on Saturday.
Ruskin Bond said that he was amazed to see how clean and beautiful the steel city had turned when he visited Jamshedpur last Friday. He felt the similar cleanliness while visiting Ranchi on Saturday. Today, Bond discussed his experience of writing for children at the JLM.
Giving tips to future writers, he said that one should try to be oneself first. One should not try to copy the writing styles of others, he added. Further, he told that to be a good writer, reading good books and trying to develop own style is important. Ruskin has authored several novels, short stories and children books on his credit. Some of them have been made into films as well. Sharing his childhood experience Ruskin Bond said, “I was quite a bookworm from my early school days, and was in fact made in-charge of the school library. But just like other children I was never interested in exams. I used to hate them and never studied for them. I was good in humanities subjects like literature and history, which really did not require much effort from me”.
The Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, the dream project of PM Modi, which he launched a few months after becoming the PM, has been appreciated all over the world. Even the World Bank and global icons like Bill Gates have endorsed the Swachh Bharat mission. Bill Gates, while addressing at Goalkeepers event in New York, applauded the efforts of Indian government towards cleaning the nation. He also added that this will help in reducing the malnutrition rate in the country and help kids to grow to their full mental and physical potentials.
The Swachh Bharat Project is set to be completed in 2019. This campaign has created the necessary awareness among the mass toward cleanliness. Celebrities are endorsing this campaign and it is having a mushrooming effect on masses. However, there is still a scope for reforms in it. We need stricter laws and robust cleaning mechanism to match the global standards. Underpaid staffs, lack of bins, public behaviour etc. has to improve for this mission to be successful.
