Trevor Noah, Statue of Unity

The Statue of Unity, the world’s tallest statue, a 182-metre structure built as a tribute to India’s first deputy Prime Minister, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel has become a global hot potato. The poor man’s replacement of Jon Stewart on American television program Daily Show, Trevor Noah, without having an iota of knowledge about India’s freedom struggle or the real founding fathers, mocked the statue of Unity in a derisive manner.

Trevor Noah during his show ridiculed the Statue of Unity. He made absurdly distasteful remarks about the Statue of Unity. First, he questioned India on erecting a $ 400 million (Rs 2,989 crore) statue, adding a reference that money should have been better used in helping out the caravan that is making its migration to the United States, which US President Donald Trump calls as an ‘invasion’. Noah dragged Mahatama Gandhi also during his cheap comedy show as he made a mean remark suggesting that it would have been better for India to build a statue of Mahatma Gandhi, by offering a vile reason that ‘he was much skinner, which would have reduced the cost by half.’

Noah said, “$400 million.. for a statue? You realize for that amount of money you can fly the caravan back from Sweden first class…What are you doing India? I am not saying that India shouldn’t build statues, but not build one of like Gandhi. He is also famous and he was much skinnier.. Then they could have saved the materials, same height, half the cost.”

He received flak on social media for his offensive and unpleasant remarks. Noah got fitting responses for his ignorant, offensive and unpleasant rant. People on social media schooled him about importance of statue of unity for India.

Twitter users from India reacted on Noah’s remarks asking him to stop making comments if he is unaware of Sardar Patel.

Another Twitter user told Trevor Noah to show respect towards India and its heritage and asked if he ever wished to make fun of The Statue of Liberty.

While he got fitting responses for his ignorant rant, it should be noted mocking India and its culture has become almost a pattern. These people who have contributed nothing to their country pass their opinion on everything under the sun, and ridicule those who sacrificed their entire life for a nation. India also has large number of such elements who ridicule its tradition, culture and national icons to gain cheap publicity. Our desi liberals pick up a thread and then their western counterparts popularise it. Trevor Noah must apologise and so should the desi liberal community who start this cycle of misinformation and propaganda.

Statue of Unity, the world’s tallest statue has received over lakhs of tourists in just fourteen days since its opening. The 182-meter statue of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel has enhanced the tourism industry in the region, and as observed by Mehul Sayani, “Creating the world’s tallest statue is, by no means, a small feat, considering the planning, design and execution; everything happened in India and was done by Indians. With this statue, Modi has basically shown to the world that we can build anything the world wants us to build. We have the talent and the vigor to achieve it. If we can do it for us, we can do it for you too. Statue of Unity will serve as the largest endorsement of the talent that India possess.”

Statue of Unity is bringing fame to India while desi liberals continue to bring disgrace to the nation. The acts of people within the country give opportunities to people abroad to make fun and rant without base.
