The illegal immigrant problem is a huge one in India which could reach crisis levels if still left unchecked and a change in the demography of the area where they are allowed to settle. The enforcement of the NRC draft in Assam and its success has paved the way for other states to demand and enforce the draft in their areas as well. While it is crucial for the North-Eastern states and other states bordering Bangladesh to carry out an NRC draft, the first state to follow Assam’s lead might be Haryana. In Gurugram, Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar announced that the NRC draft would be conducted in his state as well. The BJP leader also said that other states in the country too should think about conducting the NRC in their boundaries.

The Haryana CM added that the state government possesses a list of all the illegal Rohingya immigrants which were staying inside Haryana. The NRC survey conducted in Assam was a courageous procedure conducted by the state government after taking into account the mass influx of Rohingya and illegal Bangladeshi population and its burden on the resources of the state. CM Khattar has always remained a vocal supporter of the NRC draft since the initial days when it was conceptualized for Assam. With the undeniable success it has achieved in Assam, the other states now have all the more reasons to think about conducting one in their own. The need to rid their states of illegal immigrants is being felt throughout the country from the south to the north. The people whose names do not appear on the NRC list are considered to be illegal immigrants and they are given further opportunity to prove their residential status.

This is an important speech by the Haryana CM, considering it will lead to an easy process for identifying and deporting illegal immigrants.  The statement too has come at a very important time considering PM Modi is all set to visit Haryana and is scheduled to hold a rally in Rohtak, Haryana in the next few days. CM Khattar also gave details of the development work carried out by the BJP government in Haryana in his visit to Gurugram. His visits prove that the party is all set for the state assembly elections to be held next year in Haryana. These moves will not only help the BJP in the state assembly elections but will also prove to be of immense help in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. BJP president Amit Shah has already hinted that the NRC will become a national exercise but with the states themselves showing their interest the center might not have to worry about taking a tough decision anymore. These moves will embolden the faith of the Indian residents and will also free up the resources which are captured by the illegal Rohingya and Bangladeshi immigrants in the state.
