Two students were shot dead in North Dinajpur district of West Bengal. The incident took place at Daribhit High School near Islampur. One of the victims has been identified as Rajesh Sarkar (19). His only fault was that he was protesting against the state government’s decision. From a very long period of time the students of the school had been demanding appointments of main subject teachers (Science, Maths and Literature in Bengali medium) but the state government ended up sending 3 Urdu teachers instead. When the new teachers arrived at School, students protested and that’s when Mamata Banerjee unleashed her police against them. According to latest news reports, in the ensuing police firing by Mamata’s police, at least 2 students have lost their lives. The latest victim is Taposh Barman, a student of class 11 and many other students have suffered serious injuries.

A student of Darivit High School said, “Policemen attacked us, there were no women constables on the campus. They abused us and manhandled us. What were we doing that they had to resort to a lathi-charge? We were just protesting against something.”

Sending Urdu teachers instead of promised teachers of main subjects shows the blatant Muslim appeasement politics of Mamata government in West Bengal. She has stooped so low in her pursuit of Muslim appeasement politics that even students’ lives doesn’t matter to her. What matters to her is to stay in power and for that no matter how many innocent lives are lost, she would not budge.  Instead of fulfilling students’ rightful demand for better teachers, Mamata put her Muslim appeasement policy first and then unleashed lethal force on innocent students protesting for their right to education.

It’s not the first time that Mamata’s police have unleashed terror against students in West Bengal. In February last year, local police of the Tehatta locality had severely beaten the school students because they were protesting against the restriction on Saraswati Puja celebration in their school. Earlier, some Muslim students demanded to celebrate Nabi Diwas inside the Tehatta High school. The Headmaster had allowed the students to hold a 15-minute prayer on 29thDecember to celebrate the Prophet Mohammed’s birth anniversary.

The students were not satisfied and they gathered a mob of 10,000 people including some hardcore fundamentalists. They set up a stage within the campus and started religious speeches without any permission, to which the headmaster objected. The fundamentalists started vandalizing the school. As a result, the school administration shut the school for a short period. The school was reopened after some days. A local Muslim leader named Qasim Siddiqui was constantly opposing the reopening of the school. The local administration issued an order to close the school to avoid communal clash. On 31st January, the students of Tehatta High School carried a three-foot tall Saraswati idol and marched on the National Highway 6 as a protest against the order. They demanded to open the school so that they could celebrate the Saraswati Puja in the school. The local police had beaten the unarmed students and forced them to retreat. Some school-girls were severely injured.

Notably, none of the left-liberal cheerleaders of student politics have spoken a word against the atrocities committed by Mamata’s police against innocent students in West Bengal. Even the media is not giving ample coverage to the incident.
