Rajnath Singh’s intervention puts monster behind bars

Recently, a video of a man mercilessly beating a woman went viral on social media. The video attracted lots of condemnation and the people demanded harshest possible punishment for the man who was the perpetrator of violence in the video. Later on, it was found that person in the video, Rohit Tomar, is a Delhi policeman’s son. On Friday, he was arrested and charged with rape and criminal intimidation in two separate cases. He had assaulted two women in separate incidents. The arrest came hours after Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh asked Delhi Police Commissioner Amulya Patnaik to arrest the accused swiftly. Rajnath Singh expressed his concern over the case on Twitter and he also added that he had held talks with the Delhi Police commissioner over the case.

He tweeted, ““I have taken note of a video where a youth has been seen severely beating a woman. I have spoken to the Delhi Police Commissioner over the phone and directed him to take necessary action in this regard.”

DCP (Dwarka), Anto Alphonse, said, “I came to know about the viral video in which one person is beating the girl. Efforts were made to contact the girl but in vain. On Friday, the victim was contacted. She came to the police station and gave a written statement in which she alleged that on September 2, one Rohit Tomar called her to his friend’s office at Uttam Nagar and assaulted her sexually.”

The second case against Rohit Tomar was registered at the Tilak Nagar police station. The woman who filed the complaint stated that Rohit Tomar had threatened and assaulted her. DCP (West) Monika Bhardwaj said, “We have registered an FIR under sections 354 (molestation) and 506 (threatening) of the IPC (Indian Penal Code) after we received a complaint. Further investigations are in progress.”

It is quite shameful that Home Minister Rajnath Singh had to intervene to ensure quick arrest of a disgusting perpetrator of violence who in turn happens to be the son of a policeman. Are members of the police force and their family above the law of the land? Are their families allowed to do anything and get away easily as long as some higher authority does not intervene to ensure that justice is delivered. Why is the Home Minister’s push needed to arrest a man beating a woman? Why can’t police themselves take quick action, is it because the halo of being a member of policeman’s family stopped others from acting quickly?

This incident once again showed the power of social media. Had this video not surfaced on social media then the accused would have continued with his brutalities against the victim girl. As of now, Rohit Tomar is behind the bars and the Delhi police should make sure that he remains there for a very long time and it should also ensure that his policeman father does not influence the trial process.  An uncivilized person like Rohit Tomar should be meted out the harshest possible punishment which would set a very strong precedent.
