West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee backed ‘Missionaries of Charity’,which is facing serious accusations of selling newborn babies. The Missionaries of Charity, founded by Teresa, is in news over the shocking accusation of running a child trade racket in Jharkhand. According to reports, 450 women were pregnant at the Ranchi centre of the Missionaries of Charity between 2015 and 2018 but the childbirth records of only 180 babies have been found which means that records of 280 kids are missing.

The Missionaries of Charity is a Roman Catholic religious congregation established in 1950 by Teresa. Just few days ago, one Nun and another staff from the Jharkhand branch of Missionaries of Charity were arrested in the case. Anima Indwar, in her confession statement admitted to selling four newborn babies. She also revealed that Nun Konsolia was involved with her in this crime. Anima in her confession statement also revealed the names of the parents whose newborns were sold by her. Jhunu Kumari’s son was sold for Rs 50,000 to a family in Mohrabadi. Hemlata Murmu’s son was sold for Rs 50,000 to a family in Kantatoli.  In her confession letter she also mentioned that she took Karishma Topo’s child from Sister Konsalia and sold it for Rs 1,20,000 out of which she kept Rs 20,000 and gave Rs 1,00,000 to Sister Konseelia

However, Mamata Banerjee thinks all these allegations of child-trafficking are BJP’s conspiracy to malign the image of ‘Missionaries of Charity’ and now the BJP is targeting the nuns. She tweeted, “Mother Teresa herself set up Missionaries of Charity. And now they are also not being spared. Malicious attempts to malign their name. The Sisters are being targeted. #BJP want to spare no one. Highly condemnable. Let MOC continue to do their work for the poorest of the poor.”

Today, the police rescued one more child, allegedly sold by Missionaries of Charity. Regarding the incident Ranchi Senior Superintendent of Police, Anis Gupta said, “Of the four children allegedly sold (by the shelter home), the third child was rescued today from Simdega. A few people have been detained for questioning in this regard.”

Mamata Banerjee’s ignorance towards crimes like this will only encourage others to start with this kind of  business. Ms. Banerjee has crossed all the limits of appeasement. West-Bengal has a sizeable Christian population. Derek O’ Brien is an influential Christian leader from West-Bengal and he is a member of TMC party of Mamata Banerjee. Hindus are getting disenchanted with Mamata Banerjee and the BJP is on the rise in West-Bengal. Thanks to the appeasement politics of Mamata Banerjee, lately BJP’s popularity has increased.

As far as this issue of selling babies is concerned, it is a very serious matter which requires a CBI-inquiry. It might be a more complex issue.
