Sanjay Nirupam, the Shiv Sena turncoat and the current President of Mumbai Regional Congress Committee is an insignificant figure who often makes crass remarks in order to be seen as relevant in day to day politics. Sanjay Nirupam lost the 2014 Lok Sabha elections by a record margin of 4.5 lakh votes which showed the distrust people from his constituency had for him after his 5 year stint as an MP. Sanjay has worked in the media for a significant amount of time and he uses the skills picked up there to maximum effect in order to sensationalise issues so as to stay active in politics. In the past he has given many controversial and derogatory statements regarding MP Smriti Irani by calling her a ‘TV show dancer’ during a TV debate, for which he was widely criticized. His character and his crassness combined with his immoral words are material enough to push him into oblivion. He continued this trend in 2018 too when he called the Governor of Karnataka ‘a dog for following the BJP’s orders’. This derogatory comment was perhaps too little for Sanjay Nirupam who wanted more publicity. The latest allegation by Sanjay  Nirupam is that the Mumbai police are following and watching him under orders from a higher authority.

Sanjay Nirupam’s latest allegations are against the Mumbai police, which is, according to him, acting under instructions from above i.e. the BJP state government in Maharashtra. Sanjay alleged that Mumbai police had been used by the state government to confine him to his house in order to stop any planned protests against BJP President Amit Shah who was on a state visit to Maharashtra.

“Since morning, a number of policemen are standing outside and inside my building, and this was despite the fact that we had not announced any agitation,” Nirupam said, he added,“It seems that the BJP government fears that we will gherao or agitate in front of Mr. Shah and that is the reason that it wants to confine us within our houses.” He also said that the Congress workers are being harassed by the police to provide security for BJP President Amit Shah.

Police spokesperson DCP Deepak Deoraj, when contacted by leading daily The Hindu, denied that there is any such detention or house arrest imposed on Sanjay Nirupam or any other Congress leader. “We have increased bandobast all over the city today due to VIP movements, and beat marshalls as well as patrolling units keep passing by and checking for any untoward or suspicious activity. One such unit is being portrayed in an inaccurate light,” Mr. Deoraj said rubbishing all claims made by Sanjay Nirupam.

Sanjay Nirupam is under the delusion that he is important enough to face detention, while truth of the matter is that he is not even a threat to any local leader, let alone BJP President Amit Shah. The Mumbai Police have greater tasks at hand than wasting their time by keeping a close eye on an irrelevant figure. He does not even feature in Congress’s own list of top five leaders from Maharashtra. Rumour mongering and crass comments are his forte and he makes good use of them to stay in the headlines whenever needed. Just like his previous allegations, this one does not hold any solid ground. In a few days he will be back in his shell, trying to cook up some new story to make headlines. Maybe he can gain some brownie points from inside Congress by making these stupid claims but all he will get from the public will be ridicule and mockery.
